What was the last DJ related item you bought?

Yeah no problem, the guy is called Digifunk Technics in Sunderland. He is called Jonny and is a top guy, ex clubber who loves his tunes.

I dont know how local that is to you, but if you’re further down i believe there is a guy in Leeds who does it too.

My pitch was quite far out when he tested it so its all been calibrated again, the dots on the side weren’t reading correctly. It might be placebo but i had a set with them last week and they did seem tighter in the mix.

The kind of purchase I love (less than a tenner), although not overly happy about the circumstances behind it.

I’ve had to buy a couple of TRS male to female extension cables. The reason being, I’m not getting enough kick out of the sub when my monitors are running quite loud. The solution is to run the sub off the master out then run the monitors off the booth, so I can control them independently.

Specs wise it’s a Mackie 8” Sub I recently bought (the presonus one I was using died, and they have basically zero service options) and a pair of Focal shape 50s. The focals have no volume control at all so you’re relying on whatever the sub puts out if you run them from the outlets on there.

I wonder when someone will offer a good quality home DJ oriented 2.1 sub and monitor system, yes I’ve seen Mastersounds offering, no I don’t have 4 grand kicking about to buy it lol.

What would be the defining characteristics of such setup - compared to:

  • studio monitor 2.1 setup
  • active/passive PA 2.1 setup
  • hifi 2.1 setup?

The issue for me is more in the sense that there is way too much stuff you can use for that same purpose (home DJ booth setup).

Seems the standard is to use bigger size studio monitors, with or without the subwoofer, even if you don’t dable in music production.

Many studio monitors have no volume control, with the expectation that the ‘mixing desk’ will handle it. Unless you buy matching brands they are also often incompatible (as ive found out this past couple of weeks), with the sub having hardly any output but the monitors being far too loud.

Studio monitors are also normally quite flat sounding, I dont think we as DJs want that do we, we want a more ‘hifi’ sound from them. Currently the only DJ type speakers we can get are either PA systems (too big for your house) or something like those Pioneer speakers that dont offer 2.1.

I just wish there was a package home DJ 2.1 speaker setup, where you can just buy it, plug it in and use it, without having to spend hours tinkering around to get a sound.

You should be able to go to a DJ retailer and just buy an all in one box with the 3 speakers to get you up and running, we’ve never been able to in the 26yrs ive had decks. Buying a mixer and decks, or controller is simple, speakers the opposite. And this is coming from someone who actually knows a bit about it, it must be mind boggling for people who dont.

See if you can grab a cheaper pair of the matching Mackie CRX-5 monitors for the sub.

They sound decent for the money and have a volume in the front which helps a lot. They treat back for around £150 a pair.

Something along the lines of this? Fun Generation Satmix 2.1 – Thomann Nederland

I’ve ordered some male to female TRS and going to control the focals on the booth out, that way I can balance the sound out. Should allow me to jack the sub up a bit and equalise it.

Yeah man sort of, that’s kind of still a bit PA system but might work. Almost like those Pioneer ones but with a compact sub that goes with them.

“Gender changers” – that’s a no-no in some circles

Kinda like a non-binary digital coax cable?

Yeah and I won’t go down the route of saying one is the master and the other is……

Would sticky out bit to sticky in bit work better? :joy:

I heard that InMusic is planning to change the XLR outs to a hermaphrodite plug, because the male/female thing is discriminating

You might want to look at soundsystems aimed at gamers. Some of them can deliver a nice punch.

Ohhh yeah, thats a great shout, never even thought about that.

For me, when you say “DJ oriented”, that means that you can use it for small gigs, not just as installed in your home DJ booth.

I would personally got for something like Turbosound Inspire IP300 paired with a small sub that has a crossover for the tops.

Yeah i get that with the flexibilty thing, but talking purely home setup was kind of the angle i was taking as i personally would keep gig gear separate, ive shared it between the wo previously and it only ever ended up with me never having my gear wired up at home. I think @Ben-E is onto something with the gamer setups.

You got me there - been there, done that with mixer/decks

Honorable mention of Logitech X-230 and the bigger brother, the 5.1 system one X-530.

Many apartment parties were done using those, countless hours on Kallax/Expedit booths practicing DJ mixes and even a few gigs as monitors in some shady bars/hole-in-the-walls.

Moin,

tired of disassembling my home equipment when I have a GIG and to bring my home equipment along, I invested as follows and on the pictures you can see the delivery (jerked into the entrance of the house by the shipping company and I myself transported it five floors into my apartement).

Furthermore you can see the assembled new equipment in my living room (only for testing purposes) and me on the way to the last GIG:
