Playlists Suddenly Disappeared – Prime 4+ Crash During Gig (Engine DJ 4.3.1)

Hi everyone,

Last night I was playing a gig using my Prime 4+ running the latest Engine DJ version 4.3.1, when I encountered a serious issue: right in the middle of my set, all of my playlists disappeared from the Collection view. All the tracks were still visible, and the drive tab was still accessible, but the playlists were completely gone from the browser.

Obviously, restarting the unit in the middle of a performance isn’t ideal - but in this case, I didn’t even have to make that decision. The controller crashed and restarted itself after about 15 minutes. While that saved me the step, it’s definitely a major problem and incredibly frustrating.

I took some pictures showing the situation: one showing how the playlists disappeared, and another after the reboot where they reappeared as if nothing had happened.

Here’s some additional context:

- The unit had been running for about 6 hours before the issue occurred.

- I had transferred tracks from my laptop to the controller using Computer Mode earlier and Apple Music as well as Tidal were running over a Hotspot.

- After switching from Computer Mode back to Standalone Mode, I didn’t perform a restart - I went straight into the event.

I hope this report can help identify and fix a potential bug. Maybe someone else has experienced something similar or has an idea what might have caused it - or even better, a solution?

Thanks in advance!

PS: Don’t roast me for the playlist - desperate times call for dancefloor bangers!

Moin @Moewe,

really Sch…

regarding Playlist: Music is very individual. The playlist will show that you make the music for the guests.

For a venue I had to buy some tracks and trained them. They are not my flavour, but I was glad to have them in my tool box.

Enjoy the 1st of May and hopefully the breakdown you reported will not happen a second time.

Hello. The same thing happened to me, but it didn’t restart. I switched to an external drive or Tidal and switched back to the internal drive. After that it worked normally. It’s true that this happened to me 4 to 5 times in one night.

I have Prime 4. It’s not a plus.

I tried this if course but it didn’t work.

This happened to me only when I was connected via WiFi to Engine Dj on my laptop. Switching sources usually fixes it.

Regarding crashes, I haven’t had one in a good while

I had this too, but only once. The playlists disappeared and the device choked. Several times on that evening. Rebooting helps for some time. It was only on one location but there it happened repeatedly. I tested it extensively the next day at home and all was OK, never happened again. I assume that it was something with the power. The location was very old and maybe the quality of the power lines was not good enough. Spikes, fluctuations, things like that.

I’d be more than happy to provide system data to Denon staff if that’s possible. I’m a fan, and I really want to contribute to solving this issue. There’s always something happening during a gig, and I’d love to help troubleshoot.

I’d personally rule out power fluctuations as the cause. Maybe it’s an overheating issue, with the processor throttling itself or something similar?

But the thing is that you had basically two different issues - playlists disappeared and that the device crashed, though we don’t know for sure if the first issue actually caused and triggered the second one. The first one might have something to do with switching and transferring files using Computer Mode, and the other one might be a software / CPU crash and an automatic restart, or power fluctuations.

I also have Prime 4+, but running version 4.2.0 since 4.3.1 is has some serious bugs for me right now that I’ve previously reported, and I’ve been mainly using only 2 channels, and I see that you’ve been utilizing all four, meaning that that might have caused CPU to throttle, that’s my unprofessional guess for now

Hi , exactly the same thing happened to me except it happened twice with a full floor both times luckily enough I have been at this game many times. Some people understood a bit better than they may have. I want answers to this or it’s going back prime 4 + I never complain. I just get on with it but this can’t carry on. This was after the update yesterday thanks for highlighting and I hope we both get this sorted. Anyone else had the problem?

Hi that’s very informative. Thank you but my playlist just disappeared and then the unit crashed more than once. It’s just so frustrating when you have a full floor personally I love the prime4+ but since I bought it, I have had several issues which I never had on the older version. I will keep an eye on your updates. Thanks again.

I’d suggest you to downgrade to 4.2.0 for now, since you’re not losing anything of not running 4.3.1 rather than Apple Music integration, and 4.2.0 seems way more stable

Prime 4+ user here! Had the same crashing issue. With 4.3.1 my consolle crashed several times without warning during gigs. Had no clue on why and everything was perfectly normal before that. I downgraded to 4.20 and hadn’t had any problems since. Such a pity

Absolutely, I would be grateful to know, that @EngingeDJ staff is aware of the problem and going to fix it.

Did you had any information popup about drive being removed without Ejecting? I seen similar issue happened when usb stick was disconnecting it self due to vibration. That also caused the device to reboot due to excessive data loss occurring during the vibration disconnections. Maybe check with SD card if it will happen again? What was your storage? SSD drive, USB stick, SD card?

Storage was SSD Drive. No USB or SD connected.

OK, so we can narrow down the issue maybe a bit.

Can you inspect the connection on your SSD? Is the connection sitting correctly, or the cable is not twisted or pressed by anything?

Hey NoiseRiser,

thanks for your suggestion – I appreciate the input. However, I think the root cause might lie elsewhere. I’ve never experienced anything like this before the most recent update, and I’ve already seen others reporting similar behavior with the same kind of UI glitch.

Also worth noting: all tracks were still fully accessible, only the playlist structure was gone. That’s why I think the issue is less about hardware connection (the SSD is seated properly and has never caused problems) and more likely related to how the system handles or indexes library data since the last update.

Happy to keep testing if needed – just wanted to flag that your angle, while helpful, might be heading in the wrong direction in this case.

Best,

Moewe

Hey @Moewe Sure, just wanted to rule out hardware issues.

Maybe try testing with fresh data base export to your SSD? Maybe there are some faulty code lines in it (could happen after update?).
