I’ve been reading this tiresome mud-slinging a bit…
Where do I find that importing tracks from Explorer/Finder should be in the same sorting order directly into a playlist? How does Engine now how one has sorted it?
What I mean is for instance: When a playlist is created in Engine and is sorted by Artist, but I have sorted my Explorer to Title; and then do a drag-drop. What should we expect to happen?
I agree that one would expect things, but that’s a different question.
To be fair, there are lots of lovely helpful people and one person mudslinging. Who I’d happily block as they seem to bring nothing useful to the forum. If only blocking existed.
What is to be expected, well as I raised the bug to the forum, I’d say it’s not unreasonable to find that it’s not randomized when imported.
The manual also says - “The tracks will be numbered according to the order they were added to the playlist”
Hence the the question is it unreasonable to expect the manual to be right?
I’m dragging files in a certain order, the manual says they will be number according to the order they are added to the playlist.
As others have said, this might be an engine bug or a windows bug.
In case you’re in any doubt it doesn’t help in anyway to answer the question I’ve posted here
It’s zero help
1/ it’s wrong
2/ I don’t care you think the manual is wrong - take it up with the manual writers
3/ you’re expressing an opinion - I don’t care about it and I’m sorry that means you’re getting upset
4/ opinions in general aren’t useful
Perhaps you can find someone else’s question to be no help on ?
The manual is not wrong. Your interpretation of the manual is wrong.
Several of us have explained that sorting in Explorer is not linked in any way to sorting in Engine DJ. Changing the sorting in one does not affect the sorting of the other.
Several of us yes - at least three different people. We’re trying to help. If you’re not prepared to accept what you’re being told then there’s not much else we can do.
You can MUTE another account, if you want. Not really the same, but still something.
If you add tracks to a playlist from the tracklist or another playlist (from within Engine!), they will be added and numbered as they were sorted by view from the source track/playlist.
It doesn’t state anything about how you add a bunch of “sorted” tracks from external programs. See my previous comment on how Engine would know that.
So this is from Windows 11, but I think Windows 10 does the same.
If you right click where you can see name filename etc you’ll get a list of columns, one of those (confusingly given the engine DJ name is not aligned) #
Which is the track id that the track has in it’s meta data.
Once you’ve added (in windows explorer) the # field if you click on it, then it’s sorted by track ID, which makes sense for a CD for example, or an audio book that is normally plaid in order.
Testing in VDJ to see if it’s a windows thing / engine dj thing.
If I drag from the explorer window sorted by # (track id) it does transfer by track ID.
If I sort by file name same.
Artist
However I then re-tested in engine and can get it to do the same.
So it looks to be a windows ISSUE.
If you select the list via control A, windows puts the focus at the bottom of the list and randomly gives them to engine.
If you however select the first track in your sorted list, be it by Artist, Filename or Track id (#) it correctly sorts them.
Very odd behaviour. So it is possible to do what I think the manual says you should be able to do and for me, the expected behaviour.
You just need to make sure your mouse drags the top of the list over.
Again, thanks for the suggestions and help Stu-C and Andy-C it’s really helped me get to the bottom of the issue.
The tracks will be numbered according to the order they were added to the playlist
Is where I got it from.
If you see my post to Stu-C, that is in fact what happens bar one weird caveat.
When you select a list ctrl-A in windows you can be anywhere in that list and drag it and if you’re dragging a group, you’d expect it to make no difference.
However you get a difference result in engine (and VDJ tested) if you select the top of that list and drag, the bottom, or some random point in the middle.
So you can get it to do what I want it to do, but you have to select the top of the sorted (in windows explorer) list.
So final question, how do I suggest a block function for the forums to make mods lives easier?
