I had a Go+ which is now being returned due to driver issues (explained in another thread), however using a Samsung T7 SSD rather than a slower SD card the search and track loading (mp4 video files) is pretty much instant.
I hope you’re using a powered USB hub with that T7, the USB ports on the Denon Prime hardware do not provide sufficient power for the T7 1.5A draw and can cause unexpected drive disconnections. I’m using a 1tb SanDisk SD card with no speed issues, maybe it’s the SD media you’re using.
No powered hub. T7 works perfectly well on its own it seems.
Thanks for the input about Ssd drive / SD cards.
What is the current biggest AND efficient SD card nowadays? (I’ve searched the forum but the technology changes so fast)
A lot of people are using 1tb cards, best to go for class 10 (200mb/s) or above if you can afford it.
Where are you getting the info that the T7 uses 1.5A?
I can find no mention of that, and it comes with a USB-C to A cable, allowing it to connect to ports with the original 500mA limit.
Samsung’s own site says “Samsung Portable SSD products operate with as little as 2.5W (5V/0.5A) of power supply”.
Look on the drive on the end opposite to where you plug the cable in, it’s right there. It can operate 5V/0.5A (which is corpo speak to cover their ass) but when it comes to real world operation with constant R/W (which any DJ system does) it will draw more and you may get “Failed to eject properly” errors due to the USB buss having spikes in power draws.
Just giving you and anyone else a heads up who’s using newer external SSD that this could be an issue.
Edit: FYI heat will also cause USB drive slow downs and R/W errors, T7 drives get hot, USB cooling it does help with performance.
Perfect That’s a lot
If it’s lightness you want:
I wouldn’t (and don’t) use a flight case for the go. I use a Magma Riot backpack.
My largest SD cards are 128Gb. Comfortably big enough to cover a gig of mixed tunes.
Plus streaming from my iPhone hotspot works fine for Tidal etc…
You know the Go has access to pads 4-8 via the bank button, right?
… and grab a folding desktop laptop riser, (not a DJ laptop holder - overkill).
An adjustable laptop stand works well with the Prime Go. Gives it enough tilt to work with easier and see the screen. They cost literally nothing on Amazon.
Aye, I use similar shiny-fancy-robust stands for lots of my stuff, including the Control One (in horizontal orientation, yes). Prime Go has a similar form factor to my (sold) Roland MC-707 so it will fit on there nicely. Cost like 25 bucks. Boyata is the (no-name) brand, but there are similar variants, go for one which is roughly sized for a 15-16" laptop.
As for external drives, mind that the speed is not just about how fast your SSD is… T7 is overkill, I got several T5s when they were cheap, they’re still fast enough for all kind of tasks. I prefer SD cards for convenience and size, but they are slower, as non of the SD-readers in the Denon, Numark or Akai units seems to best faster than regular UHS-I.
Haha oh no … now you’re talking me into getting the GO. And yes, it is lightness I’m looking for. The backpack looks ideal. Somehow the GO seems more suited for “naked” play than the Prime 2…can’t explain why.
Yes I know there’s acces to 2#4 banks of loops - so that consideration ought to be out of the equation. Thank you for pointing this out
Yes, I’m coming round to your way of thinking. It’s a pain having to connect the T7 all the time and just have it hanging out the back so I have ordered a 512gb Sandisk 200mb/s card which should be fast enough.
At least it’s recessed and can just stay in the Go+ except for getting updated.
Great suggestion. I’ve already got exactly this stand. Use it for a Lyra 8
Ok - that is good info - didn’t know. It could spare me some cash.
I often purchase the newest model (T7) just to be safe - often overkill
My tactic is to usually go for “the second newest” when it comes to many (but not all) con/prosumer devices and accessories: Rule of diminishing return. Right around when the M3 Max was released, I snatched a sealed M1 Max 16" Macbook Pro for 2800€ instead of 4100€. For external SSDs I don’t care if they are 800Mb/s or 1200Mb/s (also: less heat). The OG Prime 4 is still powerful, and I prefer it’s white version over the P4+. Smartphone… get the one from last year for 1/2 the price. iPad, same. The list goes on…
Afaik the T5’s aren’t available anymore on Amazon, though.
Yes -as few cables as possible.
Hey everyone Just a big thumbs up and thank you for all your info and ideas. It really helps me (pro/cons). Nice to see the community works
Excellent strategy. Also as it is brand new items with guarantee.
After today’s thread/discussion, I think I’ll keep the Prime 2, but if I go for GO (as additional fun) there will be a decision between GO or GO+. According to your strategy,it should be the first version (off course depending on the price difference)
