Talk me out of selling my Prime2 to get the Go+

I know this is a rather subjective issue, but I need You guys help.

I’ve got a Prime2 with a big SSD disc installed. It lives in a secure flight case, and it got a decksaver as well.

I play all kinds of gigs: Private partys, noise at a museum, 6 hour sets in front of a shop, opening of a Theatre show , ambient sets in a church at night, Standards for elderly, Cypher/B-boys battles etc. I also use it all the time in my music studio: As inspiration, pitch shifting my own material etc.

I play all kinds of music: From noise, to techno, old house, French pop, African, Classical, dub, film music, cheesy stuff, soundbeds. I love to improvise unprepared, and one of the really really great things about the Prime2 is the acces to all my tracks from the SSD - it gives me freedom.

However. Because of several life issues (operations), I can no longer play as many gigs as I used to. I also have trouble with the weight of the unit+flightcase. I´m not as mobile as before. Suddenly, my beloved Prime2 feels like a burden in several ways. Yes, I could get a lighter case/bag for transport, but I hate to use the Prime “naked”… Too many potential catastrophes

So, I´m eyeing the new Go+ I love the small form factor, and guess I could put it in a flightcase and still be able to carry it. The bluetooth option could be useful as well (for my kids/at home) However, I would really miss the SSD disc with all my (very eclectic) music. I don’t want to play with an eksternal disk attached. I might compromise on this though. What is the size of an SD card nowadays?

Anyway, my biggest concern is the cost of the switch, and this is where I need your support. If I get the Prime Go+, I would also need to get a proper flighcase, a decksaver, a big SD card, and a new backup disk. At the same time, I would sell the Prime2 with a big loss. I am not interested in a secondhand GO.

The switch would cost approximately 680 euro/730 US dollars… (Go+/flightcase/backupdisk/big SD card/decksaver) That is crazy for a “downgrade”

The switch would really give me peace of mind. But it is at a high cost.

What would you guys do?

Personally, I wouldn’t do it. Is that smaller size really necessary for you? Too many compromises. Short pitch faders, really tiny jogs with no center screens, only 4 pads, no hardware Mic EQ, no CUE for the Aux-In, no tilted screen, several buttons missing, the EQs placement, much worse VU metering… plus all the new accessoires needed.

The P2 is still a capable and sleek looking unit. Actually it’s a shame Denon stopped the production. I wished they would have put out a P2+ with selectable SweepEFX, Bluetooth I/O, Serato Pro support and that (gimmicky) Amazon Music. The Live 2, Go/+ and Mixstreams are pretty stripped down. Especially the Live 2 is a massive diasppointment compared to the Prime 2. At least the Live 4 is decent and has almost the same size and weight.

Thank You. Great points.

I always use all 8 pads, and I wasn’t aware of the missing Aux cue on the GO+ Also very dependent on proper VU metering because of the eclectic mix style (different mastering levels).

The smaller size is useful for me. Space is an issue both in the studio and at home. And the weight is too much. A compromise could be to get a lighter travelbag for the more “secure” gigs.

Ironically, the GO+ seems more fun, portable and easy to “get out of the house”, but if I need to prepare SD cards, it is actually more restrictive (in my mind)

Appreciate your input

Fellow Prime 2 owner here, id only ever buy the go alongside the 2, never as a replacement, too many compromises.

Haha Yes - that would be the perfect solution. Difficult to do when I also play less gigs…But what is the tipping point. I have a hard time seeing the low secondhand prices for The Prime2 - it is a fantastic unit.

Just keep it and continue to enjoy the free updates

Yeah - the updates are amazing.

Hi :purple_heart:

I cannot carry heavy gear either. But so far I have kept every piece of gear that I have bought. Even if I do not use some of it for a period of time, I am happy to have them, they are like old friends and sometimes it is time to reconnect.

The Live 4 is the limit of how much I am willing to carry around. It has no internal SSD. But using my external SSD drive is not really that bad. I do not see the Live 4 as a downgrade. While some features of my other equipment are not there, the rest still offers plenty to get creative.

If money is not a pressing issue, I would keep the Prime 2 and get a new Go+ as well. Maybe you can find a shop where you can touch a Go+ and try it out. If you already have an external drive, plug it in, see how good or not so good it feels for you. I do not have a Go or Go+, but I bet it’s fun.

I quite enjoy seeing people list things that are “wrong” with the Prime GO. They don’t seem to consider that if it did have large jogs with screens in the centre, long pitch faders, eight pads etc. etc. it wouldn’t be the size of a GO - it would be the size of a Prime 2.

It’s small because of those compromises. People often bring up the mic EQ thing, but it’s really not an issue with the right mic. I’ve heard many a stream from GO owners and the mic didn’t need any EQ.

WAX in France have just released a new rotary mixer for 2380 Euros. No EQ on the mic.

Thank you - feel your pain :grinning: :grinning:

Money is an issue, but in the light of your other point - that every piece of gear is like old friends - the money issue is not pressing. I totally get what say, and even if I might feel that the Prime 2 is way to expensive to use as a hifi system in my home, the joy it represents is so valuable.

If I should get another piece of equipment (The Go+ as an addition) is another story… It is tempting though.

Yeah - the small jogs and short faders would not be a problem. I really like the form factor of the Go.

I just found a secondhand Go for exactly the same amount that the switch would cost (still need a few add ons though…). I´m not ready for it, but sets the original idea in perspective.

Keep the inputs coming - it is a great discussion

Re - weight

I haven’t used flight cases in years. They add too much weight.

I’m a padded bag/sleeve guy these days.

And I have the gear out fully naked ….

I recently heard from a streamer friend that he’s repurchased a 1st gen GO after selling the one he had a few years ago. Bax Music in Germany have them for £815 at the moment.

I might reconsider playing naked (no pun…) but I’ve got a bit of OCD regarding the issue. I’ve got the Magma flightcase - soo heavy.

I am googling bags right now. Prefer a backpack.

I´ll pass by :+1:

I use a prime go (“first gen” I guess I would say now) with a 1TB SD card and can fit a lot of music on there, almost all of it lossless FLAC. It is a bit slow to search, but hopefully the GO+ is better. It’s my only bit of DJ gear, but I’m used to it.

Getting a GO+ with a lightweight case (e.g. UDG) and 1TB SD card for playing “out” and keeping the Prime 2 for playing at home would be my choice.

Yes - Keeping the Prime 2 as master at home and playing the GO+ “out” would be a nice solution - a bit expensive though.

My gigs (used to…) different a lot and I guess “flexibility” is key. I praised acces to all tracks/8 pads for improvising etc, but if I get jobs where this is important, I could bring the Prime 2 in a light bag. When security is important, I could bring it in the flighcase. When I play the same venue 3 days in a row (Theatre) I could bring the Prime 2 . When I play Ambient in a church the Go is better. Or in the park (cliché) or whenever I only have to play 1 genre = Go.

Exact as Denon visioned  = Get both

It is always nice to have some backup equipment.

Always :innocent: If I had the space…

But the Go+ is cute and small. :purple_heart:
