Mackie CRS-X8 bt - Anyone got experience with this Subwoofer?

Hi all, i bought this a few months back as my Presonus sub decided to die.

The problem im having is im getting barely any sound from it, to the point where i have to ramp it up so much im getting massive feedback from my stylus.

Ive tested it on the Prime 2 and whilst its a little louder with the digital connection, im still ramping the master output to what i feel are unreasonable levels to get some sound from it, and then its not exactly the ‘wow’ factor you see being spouted on Youtube reviews.

Anyone used or own one of these?

The CR8-X is generally considered a good value for budget monitor speakers.

However, 8 inches for a subwoofer seems light to really get down to the low frequencies. If you’re looking for good performance, you might be better off considering something at least 10 inches, which will allow you to go lower in the frequency spectrum, which is the whole point of a subwoofer.

You can always order it, try it out, see if it’s enough for you, and return it if it’s not. But don’t expect impressive subwoofers from an 8-inch speaker.

The trouble is, my old 8” unit did a perfect job for what I need. This thing just seems like you’re kicking the life out of it and getting barely any sound. Im convinced it’s faulty but just wanted to see what others had found.

I kind of wish I’d just bought another Presonus but the lack of repair ability when I dismantled it has put me off.

It’s probably the internal amp that has a problem, maybe swollen capacitors or something like that.

Yeah I think so, it was really cheap on eBay (new). I have a plan, get rid of it and buy the JBL IRX ONE, I’ll then use it as a sub at home and a portable PA system for parties.

It’s amazing how much more punch the Presonus had before it died, it’s much smaller than the Mackie and supposedly much less powerful.

If the 8" PreSonus was fine for you, I don’t think you’re going to risk much by trying the Mackie. They should be pretty much equivalent.

No I already have the Mackie, had it for a couple of months and it’s pretty terrible, you have to ramp up the gains so much that you get terrible feedback from the stylus sat on the turntable. In comparison the gain on the Presonus was barely up at all to have a nice sound. It’s weird.

Indeed, it is rather strange.

I see it has a input gain, tried adjusting that? How is everything connected btw?

Yeah I’ve ended up with both on full and still no ooomph. With digital files it’s a little better but still not much action.

Monitors connected to the booth out on the radius 4, sub to the master out with TRS leads.

I connected it to my Prime 2 from the master out and it was meh too. I had to have my master dial past 12 o’clock to get any sort of reasonable sound which I’ve never had to do on any other system. Nor with my old sub.

Ok so there’s 100% an issue here, I’m sending it back.

Plugged this little beast in and boom tonnes of bass with very little in the way of gains up on the mixer.

This can do the job in the meantime.

Maybe some crossover problem, filtering the lower freq.

Deff weird, usually with speakers they either work or they dont from my experience

Yeah it’s honestly doing my head in, not something I’ve ever experienced before.

I tried one last test playing a mix over Bluetooth from my iPad and it sounded woeful. It’s in warranty so hopefully get a replacement that works.

Do you mean the CR8S-XBT?

My first thought when reading yesterday was maybe this sub crosses over lower down, so you’re not hearing the upper bass/overtones that maybe the previous one had?

It’s obviously putting out something, if the stylus is picking it up.

I see now from pics that it has a crossover frequency knob. Where’s that set? Have you adjusted it? It also has a phase switch - have you tried that?

Also if you’re playing 7" vinyl there’s not going to be tons of really low end anyway, so if it’s crossing over low then you won’t get much out.

I’d suggest raising the crossover freq (if you know what the Presonus was at, set it the same) or play something with genuine lows through it to see if it wakes up.

[edit] just checked pics of the Presonus and it’s a reflex cab, whereas the Mackie is sealed. That’ll definitely have an impact.

Tried all that, my last test was playing a mix from my iPad over Bluetooth and it was barely audible with the iPad on max volume and the input on unity.

It’s faulty 100%, I plugged the Bose S1 pro in and it’s night and day difference, the Bose is producing much more sound at half the level on the master out.
