We’re talking about a faulty speaker here, if the conversations not for you, move on
It’s 112dB SPL so should be spot on.
One possible thing to investigate Stu is that the sub possibly expects the Mackie range of speakers to be plugged in so is possibly setup with different sensitivity to balance it all out.
As you’re using a different brand they could be a mismatch with how it all sounds. I know you’ve tweaked the back/remote knob to bring the levels of the output inline but I can’t help think that they may have set it up this way to work with their own CRX range predominantly.
Saying that though, you should still get a decent bit of oomph out of it so it definitely sounds faulty. I think Polar are the distributor and warranty guys over here int he UK. I’m pretty sure that’s who you got it off too.
Yeah I’ve thought of that so I’m running the sub independently from the master out on the mixer, with the monitors running from the booth.
I’ve contacted the retailer anyway (Mackies website basically offer no support in the U.K.) as it’s still well within warranty, I’ll see if I can get a replacement. It’s definitely the weirdest issue I’ve ever had with gear.
I’ll go with a fault over anything.
I’d guess and say that the stereo feed that passes though the sub gets tapped off for the 8” driver and a dry joint or loose spade connector could pass only one channel through that, reducing your sub volume by 50%.
Maybe try unplugging in each input in-turn and checking if you hear a difference? You may hear just the left channel with low bass and then when plugging in just the right it could drop to zero bass. That may work as a test to see if you’re running on 50% less sub frequencies than you should be.
Great shout, I’ll run some tests doing that with the Prime 2.
I think forgetting about the vinyl altogether for now and just focus on testing with digital files. The Prime 2 is also easier to rig up for the test.
I wouldn’t be surprised if my ramping the levels to silly amounts has also done a bit of damage too, but anyway.
I wish I could just find a back panel for the Presonus and replace it, but seems like they don’t want you to be able to do that these days. Might try and find someone local to repair it.
Right, testing complete. Changed cables, switched between master and booth out on the Mastersounds.
It seems louder on the Prime at similar levels, but there’s so many factors involved that I’d not like to put money on it being the same, 0db on one device is worlds away from 0db on another. I had the master out ramped quite a lot to get to a level where I’d say it’s usable. What is weird though, the Mackie has worse sound from the Mastersounds over the Prime 2, audibly worse, yet the Bose doesn’t…. So it can’t be the mixer causing it. My focals sound the same through both master and booth out.
I’ve just plugged the S1 pro in again with the treble down and it’s a much better sound with the master out barely being tickled, and the needle has zero feedback when sat on the record.
The plan is to use that for my home setup for the time being, then I’ll buy a portable PA system one day and use the sub from that instead.
Good idea.
I’ve not bothered with a sub as we’re detached but know that’ll change soon so I’ll just roll with fool ol’ monitors for now.
Hahaha now that’s proper
