I need some help / advice but nothing to do with my Denon equipment, it's about where we get our music from

The broken beats one is also a good genre too, quite a lot of soulful breaks type stuff in there. I think you’ll enjoy Traxsource. The site top 100 is sometimes a bit cheesy but there are also some good tracks to be found, it also gives you an idea of what is popular.

Hi PKthe DJ - Regarding radio stations there was a time when you could listen to someone like Pete Tong and hear a number of just released or about to be released tracks that you just had to get. What I was hoping for that there was a DJ on a station somewhere that got brand new tracks from the record companies that was more to my slightly older dance music taste, but all as expected are to a younger audience. Streaming is fine to listen to the odd track you do not have but I would rather already own it and have it on my music drive already if I like it.

Hi Keith, I’m almost 58 so I know what you mean about the age thing. Have a listen to DJ Groove on YouTube, his mixes are really good and he plays a lot of good stuff. I subscribe to his patreon site and he sends me loads of music.

Just signed up at Traxsource, a bit more pricey than Beatport, not much of a problem though, fun!

New house track Optimuse for free!

Inspired by DJ Q’s Optimum Thinking(1999), yet quite different.

Zip DJ is a great record pool for dance music! I think the first month is only $35 USD.

Just a general advice for all genres: by going through “top 100” and similar playlists on streaming/download sites all you are doing is grabbing from the same bucket every other DJ is using.

I seriously believe that one of the main things for a DJ is to have it’s own “sound” by having a distinct library of tracks.

Soundcloud is and still remains the main site for music producers and unsigned tracks but to discover those new artists I had good results following curated YouTube channels and then going to the artist SoundCloud profile. A lot of such new tracks are available for free download or the artists sends me the track after a polite PM.

Older DJ’s will know the feeling of having a banger track in your collection that is not known, everybody asking you about it and later seeing it blow up and artist getting big (including on those streaming sites).

I agree with this, but i will say the caveat is Traxsource top 100s tend to be a lot less commercial than say Beatport, so you can go through a soulful house top 100 and pick up a load of promo’s and decent tracks.

I agree STU-C, but i guess it’s personal taste. I love festivals like Awakenings and Tomorrowland so that’s the kind of music i am searching for. Saying that, I am a great fan of soulfull house so i am going to give traxsource a try also next to beatport.

no love for commercial djs eh

no love indeed mufasa. cudos to you commercial dj for playing same stuff all the time and making it work though. guess track digging for you then is “simple(r)”?

Not just sometimes, often times e.g. 4 different events on a weekend. he he.

I have been using Shazam Charts lately as a source for digging.

No, not the case. I play each gig totally individually, based on what the client wants, and how the crowd reacts/requests on the night. Every gig is different. Different clients, different crowds.

Even when playing the same venue regularly, the punters change, the requests change, reactions change, and therefore so does the music.

I got a dozen tracks from Traxsource yesterday.

A bit buggy when toggling around listening for different tracks, genres, looking in the carts… Appearance similar to Beatport.

Since I only got a few tracks it wasn’t a great deal this time, but when downloading them I had to check every single track and handle them separately to download them to PC. Beatport has the check all option and then comes in a one zip file. The tracks from Traxsource did also have less info(lack of bpm and key) than tracks from Beatport.

Then there was an option to use Traxsource’s own Downloader… Install another program on the PC? No! They, not unlikely, trying to force you to, by making the manual way without their software tiresome.

There was definitely an option to select all for download previously, not sure why they would remove it, i haven’t used it for years as ive had the app installed (which is a much better solution imo, you can choose destination folders for download etc).

Also look out for the deals on the front page, usually you can get 20% of and in some cases 30% if you buy plenty of tracks, i normally save mine up in the cart until i have a haul.

Hi Keith

I really find a combination of Soundcloud/other music streaming site and Shazam useful for discovering new tracks. Start by searching for the artists/songs you like, then most apps have a way to create a playlist from the track you first searched. Listen to a couple of the tracks and note the artists, then maybe do the same thing and create a new playlist from that artist.

if you can find songs in DJ sets you like but don’t know the track or artist, use an app like Shazam to ID the track for you. Then repeat the above.

Soundcloud is probably my favorite, once you’ve been rooting around on there for a couple of sessions it’s suggestions are pretty spot on, then carry on down the rabbit hole.

Agreed.

Make a playlist of two or three tracks of similar vibe and then let Tidal or Spotify make suggestions.

Traxsource has a downloaded application. You can download all at once and walk away from your laptop. Works great.

@Taisoul Didn’t you see this? Or another convenient way to download without installing more programs?

Are you sure you can’t ‘select all’ in the app for download? as far as I can remember there is a tick box to highlight all tracks for download, or a ‘download all’ button.

Edit: seems there isn’t any more, but seeing as the app is unobtrusive to your system and offers lots more flexibility with file naming and organisation, it would be disadvantageous to not use it for regular Traxsource users.

I don’t know. I’ve used the downloader for years. Never had a problem with it. They don’t update it but then again it works perfectly fine. It’s a small program. I don’t think it’s a big deal. But to each his own. I use it on PC and Mac and it’s identical.
