Post a video bro of your process, I’ve found this very helpful from the community on here to help. Keep the faith bro.
hummm, I would say go back to a working version for you.
I had similar problems with the update and my SC5000, which bricked and was sent back for repair and didn’t make it.
I ended up getting a new SC6000 and for me know everything working as before.
However I am running engine OS 4 and engine software 2.2 (the last comparable Engine software for my 2012 macbook pro).
Not sure you forgot, however you say you use tracktor v3 ( Me also), Did you remember to reload the tracktor collection file when you opened engine software? As this dose require to be reloaded and refreshed after editing in traxktor, also make sure you have closed Tracktor as this then saves the Tracktor database / your edits. Im sure you did right?
Other than that I would roll back to your working environment and all should be good. GL
so i have nearly the same config like you have.
MB pretty much the same except 32GB. I also use a big external storage for home use, a seagate 4TB Gamedrive in FAT32 (Amazon.de).
I use the SC6000, but i think there is not much difference here. I have Engine since 2.X version, and never encountered any database library corruptions. Except when i removed the USB before the sync was finished.
I am pretty certain, that your Traktor sync creates some problems here. Its always hard for any company to have every interface right between different software and get databases still right. Especially if the database is not renewed, but growing historically over different software versions. You are also not running the latest Traktor version, but the newest Engine version. I would guess (and this is no knowledge, just a guess) the Engine Team focused more on Traktor 4 to ensure compatibility with the newest software.
Honestly, while the function of different software library syncs is nice, it had/has and will have the big potential to corrupt your library. Especially with a 70K collection you increase the database corruption. Its an general IT problem you will encounter in many cases (work in this field)
I myself use rekordbox and engine parallel, but i have a folder structure on my hard drive, that makes it easy to build two independent libraries. More effort, but it gives me a big backup opportunity and easy way to recreate a new Database (and i switched from Traktor to Serato to Rekordbox and Engine without any problems).
My advice, leave the sync and create a independent library from scratch. I know its not a fun way to do, but probably will solve the Engine library problem. Right now it is already corrupted and different versions of up and downgrading, will not make it better.
On the other side, there is always the option to go to the other brand direction. While using Traktor, why not use their controllers? These are also super nice and your compatibly issues would really minimize with Traktor 3. I mean here you should still upgrade to 4.
Have some CDJ 2000 NX2 here and the 3000. If you are a aesthetics and IT affine guy, stay with the SC6000. I hate the “oldish” CDJ approach. It feels just wrong. But since you are still running 2012 MB, i dont think you really are in the IT environment (no judgment here).
So what i would do in your case, upgrade to a new mac machine (or PC). With the new Mac Mini M4 Base Model for around 599, you will be set up for the next years surely. Pretty good price here. Or go with an used older Mac that has at least a M1 chip.
I say this because, you will run in short/midterm in additional problems with other software. My friend has a 2012 MB Air and he runs constantly into problems, not engine related. Even with just using the internet, with some more demanding websites. Also you risk some security issues, because off the missing upgrades. I mean a computer running 12 years, has to enounter more problems.
On the price site, a new set of CDJs, even the NXS2, will cost you used at least 3800 EUR for a pair , if you get a good price. With the risk that you need a MAC anyway and entry costs are relatively low right now while still get a powerfull M4 MAC Mini, go for the new Mac.
This is just my opinion, but i think to buy other older DJ equipment and sell my new stuff, to match my other even older equipment (Mac), while paying even more than replacing my bottleneck for less money (M4), makes just no sense
Thank you for the interesting perspective. Yes Perhaps an up-grade / Updated Mac may be on the cards in the near future, however at this time Im not giging or doing paid work, so as It goes right now, everything I have working, and like. stated If its not broken, I have trouble replacing it.
The SC6000 works fine so far on 4.0.1 and I have found the best way to work with the “Engine Software” start fresh and make new playlists there.
As importing from Traktor creates double or triple audio files (what the foork), So I have created a new file / folder structure in Engine, and Have disregard the traktor playlists.
Everything seams to work fine right now.
But thanks again for the tips…
Thats not a option. All cues loops I have created, to start again I may as well call it quits.
What is the diff between 4.0 database and 4.1 database.?
Why don’t we stop asking people who complain about Engine Desktop malfunctioning to describe the bugs they experience in detail instead of admitting that the software needs to be completely remade?
If so many users decide to migrate to competing software, it is because, at this time, Rekordbox is a much better option than Engine Desktop for playlist preparation. It is a much more complete and refined software.
The only way to change this is to mass request those changes from InMusic. In my preference, I would like ALL of InMusic/Denon’s efforts to focus on remaking Engine Desktop even if we stop receiving updates to the hardware units.
I get sick every time I think about creating new playlists and exporting them to my SSD using Engine DJ
4.1 database rewrite’s it so then it’s only compatible with Engine OS 4.1. It wont let you then use the same database with lower engine software below 4.1
I did post about how I over came this, but is another topic somewhere on this community.
However, I have change the way I use Tracktor playlists due to the way Engine software imports them, It also sometimes makes double or triples of the same audio file.
The trick would be to stick to the latest Engine OS that your SC5000’s work with, I use a SC6000 running Engine OS 4.0.1 and Engine Software 2.2 & 4.0 Traktor 3.something, and everything works fine now.
So It might be handy to see what your doing as perhaps after such a time your missing something somehow?
It can happen after such a time.
What about those of us who don’t have any issues with the desktop software? Do we need it rewriting too?
Aside from one recent known problem that has been recognised by InMusic and is being worked on, If there are people having no issues and people having issues, then the inconsistency is with their workflow not the software, otherwise people having issues would be global. So why shouldn’t we ask people to explain where their problems lie?
I believe that good software should adapt to different user workflows, as Rekorbox does, and not that users have to adapt to the software’s workflows.
I use the same workflow and management of my database that I used years ago with Traktor.
Why did Traktor work flawlessly with that workflow and Denon doesn’t?
Even more so when Denon made a marketing campaign saying that its software was designed so that the learning curve for Traktor users was minimal in the Denon ecosystem.
So what is Engine not doing for you that Traktor is? What functions are you missing and how have you had to change your workflow?
- The program is extremely slow, I have tested it on old and obsolete computers and on modern and powerful computers. The result is the same.
- Engine Desktop has taken more than 2 hours to export a 15-track playlist on several occasions (the drive was formatted according to the specifications requested by Denon).
- I created playlists that, once created, simply disappeared from Engine Desktop when I reopened the software
- I have successfully exported a playlist to a drive and, when I got to the club, the playlists were simply not on the drive… POOF MAGIC TRICK.
I could continue listing errors that have happened to me more sporadically, but these are the ones that happen to me most frequently.
These same errors have been reported by more users. I hope that this list makes you change the perspective that many users have that, since it doesn’t give you problems, the software is perfect. Users who don’t get headaches from Engine Desktop are a minority
Do you know this to be solid fact? What percentage of overall Engine users are made up of people on the internet complaining?
As far as slowness goes, Rekordbox is just as slow if you don’t use fast storage media. Try a fast USB 3.2 drive, I managed to export 6000 tracks in around an hour with one of those. An older USB 3.0 drive would take all night with both Engine and Rekordbox.
Playlists disappearing are exactly the type of thing you should be documenting in detail with videos of your workflow, DB files passed to inmusic to investigate. Mindless ramblings about it on an internet forum are not going to kick anyone into gear to solve anything. Evidence is key here, not anecdotes.
At least in my group of friends it is like that, I have friends who work with both pioneer and denon. No one who works with Pioneer has the kind of problems that all my friends who work with Denon (including myself) have. Taking this into account, yes, within my circle, this is true.
As for export speeds, all my drives are 3.2 since I handle large collections.
I’m not a newbie, I know that export speeds are much slower in 3.0.
Regarding what you say about reporting these failures with a detailed study of the process, I disagree. Isn’t that Denon’s job? Did they just pay me a salary to reproduce and investigate those bugs that a good number of users have already complained about? Doesn’t Denon have a team in charge of investigating these failures?
Please stop putting more obstacles in the way of user complaints.
I also love Denon, which is precisely why I complain about these types of problems that I think make it difficult to penetrate the market of a brand that really cares about being a game changer, like Denon.
I’m not putting obstacles, I’m telling you that approaching a company and stating you have an issue but you aren’t willing to go into details about the issue, instead choosing to say something as vague as ‘rebuild your software’, you’re not likely to get any traction.
Are you expecting them to be mind readers? Is this how you deal with every problem in your life, random rants at people or organisations without any substance?
I can’t document the issues because I don’t have them, you do so document them, work with the company to understand where it’s failing.
Sorry but you’re all over the place here, no consistency or common sense to your viewpoints.
Edit: and for the record, you keep quoting the name ‘Denon’, there’s no such company here, they are called InMusic, and the Denon DJ brand fall under their umbrella, so at least try to get that part right then work from there.
Okay. nothing more to add
There’s plenty to add if you’re willing to do so, if you truly want to help them improve.
I know I’m quite new to the forum but surely that attitude isn’t really acceptable.
The person above made his point and that should be respected whether critical or not.
What’s with the hostility?
Software engineer here with a passion for music & the Denon ecosystem.
Engine needs serious improvements and those who have been around and have seen my posts know that I’ve been trying to get Denon to invest in that software.
That said, can you please share exactly how you ran into this issue? I’ve been using Engine since 2017 and never had this problem, though I am not saying it can’t happen. There are lots of reasons why and I’m not sure Engine itself would be the cause.
The interface is only part of the equation when it comes to speeds.
Please share a reproducible use case if/when you can. <3
