Do you ever ‘lose a bit of faith’ in your DJ setup?

I’m not talking tech wise or features, just general motivation to ‘get on the decks’.

I find the more I DJ out, the less I go on my decks at home. I’m not slating the Prime 2 here as I love it for my gigs, but it’s nowhere near my home rig but I struggle to get on my home rig when I’m out playing. I guess between my day job and gigs I’m just worn out from it.

Anyway shine of light on this post, forced myself on the decks tonight, 4 tracks in I was tempted to turn them off but persevered, 2.5hrs later absolutely on top of the world and glad I didn’t stop…l love it when this happens.

So is this just me or is it a general thing?

Hi Stu.

I’m just a hobbyist DJ so it probably does not have the same meaning, however when i was working full time i would spend at least half of my Saturday/Sunday on the decks just having a blast with myself and drowning out the kids/dogs/cat/wife 8) and i would also mess with them during the week too.

Unfortunately i was made redundant in November and given that i am still out of work you would assume that i would be buzzing to get on the decks, but similar to your experience, i turn them on dust them down and usually turn the, back off, perhaps i’m feeling guilty about having too much time on my hands 8)

I lose faith in my setup whenever I get a crappy updates for the stuff I use :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: or doesn’t work as advertised. Doesn’t matter which company or brand.

I know how you feel man, I hope you find some work soon if you’re looking though.

If not, force yourself past the first few mixes and get some enjoyment from them.

One of the big DJ channels posted something about home sets recently and I’m still 100% convinced they are the ultimate way of DJing, you can literally play what you want. I wound it down into Etienne De Crecy - 3 day weekend tonight, then thought stuff it and dropped Carl Cox’ Remix of can’t fake the feeling cos why not?…. Home sets are an absolute playground.

Haha my tip there is, don’t update …. Stick on a stable version and smash it.

I always try and find new people to teach. Usually it’s friends, but sometimes it’s random people who come up to me at the Bar and ask how to get into it. This has reinvented my love for DJing multiple times now after getting burnt out. Also, once a beginner starts to grasp it, you can learn different ways to do things or something new (because everyone develops their own style).

Yeah, when i do play i love that i can play whatever i want, i don’t have to please anyone except me.

I’ve worked since i left school at 15 - 37 years ago, this is only the second time being out but at 52 it gets slightly harder to get something decent, but we keep looking anyway

I DJ seven nights a week for four months straight then get two months off. I can honestly say I never DJ when I’m at home unless I’m playing with something fun.

If I start off my own back I usually stop after half an hour. To keep it fresh every-so-often I like to do things different so DVS and the 1210’s will her the weapon of choice but now the SL3 isn’t supported in Serato DJ I’ll have to look at other alternatives.

The Prime Go is my most used item when I’m sat on the sofa at night but the Prime 4 gets a little love. Back at work I’ll use the SC5000Ms so I do get some gear variation to keep it all interesting. I’m looking at a Warm2 from Ecler as I don’t have a mixer currently. I traded the Xone in for the Prime Go back in 2021 and never looked back.

Sort of … I have really been disappointed with new music releases over the last 3 years or so and I’ve really really had to push myself to keep listening to new music.

I did originally blame the covid situation, thinking that maybe artists were holding back the good stuff until festivals and normal clubbing could resume and help rocket the sales of their new tracks. However here we are, over a year in the clear and almost nothing significantly good, still.

And as for Beyoncé - my word girl, wash your mouth out with soap you bucket mouth

I found in the last 3 years that when I was playing out with new tunes, I caught myself “Lego mixing” (“it’s the right key and the right bpm, so shove it together) with really nothing of the umiqueness of the track being utilised, or even learnt. I’m used to hearing a song on the deck and thinking I’m my own head “this track would mix well with blah artist, singing blah song” … not just “I’ll play anything that fits in this musical hole”

Man I can resonate with this… most of my new music is on Bandcamp these days rather than the main sites.

Love the Beyoncé comment haha.

And that ‘Lego mixing’ stuff is advice all DJs should take notice of, so so easy to get caught in the key/bpm hole and forget about what mixes with what. Some of my best mixes have been way out of key because I just got a feel for what I needed to post next.

Loop and filtering will allow for anything to mix together so mixing in key, whilst a good idea in principal, should be ignored if you get the urge to play something.

Keep an old laptop and 2.5.5 for that SL3 man:) your setup is pretty much identical to mine and I couldn’t stand the thought of no DVS… it’s my at home failsafe for when I’m feeling a bit low.

DVS rules for home gigs.

Very true. I have an old Windows laptop and may dust it off for DVS. I can’t see SL3 boxes selling for too much now they are end of life. I even have an old Torq box lying around.

I feel there is less exciting tracks out too. I just play remixes of older tracks when I’m at home. Just a way to have a little more fun.

Yeah finding something brand new and original is a rarity these days, the deep house chart on Traxsource is pretty good, but again trawling through 100 tracks to find 2 at the most.

What do you mean by the Beyoncé comment?Interested to know what’s it based on. I don’t want to get the idea the forum is becoming a base for trash talk, as it seems far from the high quality tech talk, learning environment I’ve come to enjoy reading and learning from.

I think he is implying that her music isn’t very good, which I would tend to agree with… especially given the latest offering was marketed as ‘house music’.

It’s like most pop artists, their interpretation of a genre is usually poor.

I agree that it’s not, at least what I would consider to be ‘house music’ (wouldn’t fit into my house set, and I am far from a house specialist), but I respect her music for what it is. Personally the lyrics in a number of her latest offering is challenging, and personally, I am with that; nothing to do with me playing the tracks at the gigs I do.

I’ve never found her to be that great. The odd Destinys Child track was decent and I have a track called Suga Mama from one of her old albums, but the rest of it is cookie cutter RnB/Cheese and I’ve always thought there were far better female RnB acts who didn’t get as much hype.

Take Lucy Pearl as an example, they only did one album (possibly because it was a sort of super group) but that album blew anything Beyoncé did out of the water at the time and 20 odd years later still does.

Surprised, but pleased to see you (as in someone) mention Lucy Pearl highly. One of my more respected cd’s/collective, and was so looking to a follow up. I personally like Beyoncé and her music, and respect what she has done and achieved. Many of her tunes have stormed some of the gigs I have done over the years, and to me, that’s what counts on the night. Her latest is something I listen to, especially as a person of colour, there is meaning beyond just the lyrics on some of the tracks. However, I also appreciate that we don’t all (as social beings) interpret the world in the same way (clearly understandably), including our appreciation and interpretation of music and other art forms. Anyway, enough of that from me. As I said, it’s the techy talk I am interested in on this forum (social academic type stuff I leave for the day job).

It’s just that a lot of her recent tracks have so much swearing on that they’re beyond censor recovery, unplayable at most weddings/family events and seem to be playing to the adolescent gutter crowd
