Denon dj Traktor

With the serato/rekordbox connection (AlphaTheta )would be right for Traktor to unlock full integration with denon products while also adding the possibility of using the screen. What do you think? I know, there are many open topics on this

You’re on the wrong forum, this needs to be posted on the Traktor forum as they are ultimately the driver behind changes to their software.

Sorry, i will post there

From what i gather, InMusic aren’t stopping NI from supporting the devices (in fact iirc there is some reference to Traktor on some of the device packaging), its more that NI just haven’t added the support.

As far as the Pioneer/Serato thing goes, nothing has been set in stone yet so we’re all just guessing what the landscape could look like, providing the sale is allowed to go through.

on the serato rekordbox issue I believe that inmusic is rightly afraid of handing over every new project it works on to pioneer. This could help Traktor to gain an extra share of the market or make Engine a better software

Well they wouldn’t be handing anything over to the company, Pioneer DJ.

For clarity, the ‘parent’ company who own Pioneer are looking to acquire Serato, meaning both companies will sit under the same umbrella, they won’t become the same company. Serato have added controller support for the Prime 4+ in their latest release, and their current public BETA includes additional functionality for 9 different InMusic products so right now as of today, there looks to be zero change in the business relationship between the two companies.

As far as Traktor gaining market share goes, again that’s not something InMusic have any control over, that is a decision solely made by Native Instruments.

IIRC @NoiseRiser did some pretty fab mappings for the SC5000 for use with Tractor DJ.

Hey, not traktor Dj, but Traktor PRO 2 and 3 - Traktor DJ is an iPad version. I am working on a SC Live 4 mapping as well.

Hey, I’ve got a few days to return my Prime 4+ and I’m considering it. The final thing I will try is to use Traktor or Serato to manage my tracks and playlists.

Not to sound rude, but Engine DJ Desktop is just a horrible experience.

Have you had better luck with your Denon products using Traktor? Where should I start to learn more about that?

What exactly is ‘a horrible experience’ you’re having with the desktop app? What’s it not doing for you and have you asked on the forum?

I’ve pretty much moved over to Engine as my primary software now, as a Serato user of 16yrs or so.

I too am curious as to what is ‘a horrible experience’. I myself have used Traktor, Recordbox and Serato. I too have recently used engine as the main program.

  • Inability to add tracks from a network drive
  • Inability to manage multiple, isolated Collections
  • Inability to handle removable drives as sources of file
  • Inability to handle tracks no longer available (like above)
  • Inability to change conditional logic, except with BPM (Smart Playlist)
    • Only “contains” vs “is” “is not” “does not contain”, etc.
  • Inability to group logic (Smart Playlist)
  • Inability to watch directory for new files and add them automatically
  • Re-creation and duplication of tracks added if they are more than one directory deep
  • Re-creating directory structure by creating playlists for every directory
    • I’d just traverse the directories if I ever wanted this
  • Removal of Crates
  • Inability to save Analysis to the tracks themselves
  • Flickers randomly after being open to the point you have to close the application and open it again
    • Cannot read any prompts that show up when this happens. No idea what I’m clicking.
  • Inability to mark tracks or directories as “Samples”, or prevent specific tracks from showing up in Search
    • Any BPM playlist has hundreds of 1-12 second tracks littered throughout
  • Seemingly no encoded content MD5 checking

My only real beef with Engine DJ OS is that I sort by “Date Added”, and then it shows me “Date Added” instead of something useful like Genre. I think it’s a decent idea with limited screen space to dynamically show the sort values, but I also think in practice, when you sort by certain fields, that field information is useless and we should be able to override what is shown when sorting.

Or just get Genre on the screen somewhere please.

It looks like you’re probably best selling the unit and moving across to a competitor who can offer the things you’re looking for… all the best with your endeavours.

This post confuses me, if your only beef is ‘Date Added’ why are you listing multiple things, which, on reading appear they don’t function as one expects.

If all of the things you list in your post relate to your Denon hardware then i would suggest, ‘when’ you return your purchase, perhaps spend quite a bit of time researching your next new purchase to ensure that it provides everything you want/need/expect/and isn’t advertised!

I really understand you. Engine isn’t the best track management software on the market. But the devs are working on it. Several points there that you mentioned I miss too! Because?

Because I’m sure you must have also bought your Denon equipment for the appeal of getting rid of the dependence of carrying a laptop to do your events!

Because of this I try to manage my entire library in Engine Dj and then do the same, even in a smaller portion in the Engine OS of the device. But it looks like they need to improve on it! Isn’t that right?

But there’s no point in trying to show it here. There are people who don’t use the equipment like we do, and every time I even see someone complaining about how things are, I read the same answers! It seems to me that a forum where you search not only for information but also for discussions about it, is being stuck in being just a repository! If you complain, “I think you’re in the wrong gear, the competition has something better for you there.” -

Yes, it’s a critical eye I’ve been taking in watching a few things lately! But that’s it! We have our opinions on, and here is the right place for you to express it. This doesn’t mean that you’re just here to complain, but that you’d like some things to get better and you do that by participating in the discussion and putting your point of view! Even if some come to want to scold! I don’t even care anymore! 'Cause I get the hang of how things work here :+1::wink::pray:

I don’t understand your comment here, they literally said they are considering returning their Denon device, then reeled off a long list of issues they have with the ecosystem.

What else are you expecting people to say? It’s unrealistic to assume that list will be picked up and dealt with in full in any sort of reasonable timescale so the only logical conclusion is to return the gear and look elsewhere, given they already stated they were going to do it.

I was saying I’m enjoying Engine DJ OS, and have a slight issue that I can’t see Genre information. Hopeful to be able to see that more readily.

As for doing research, I researched the Prime 4+ pretty extensively, as well as other options. I didn’t think to look into software to manage libraries.

Why I posted here was for any tips others who are using external managers with Engine DJ Desktop could provide, and see if it was worth checking out.

I was asking others who are interested in using software other than Engine DJ Desktop, or integrations with those and Engine DJ Desktop, if they had any success, or recommended trying it.

I was asked which issues I have with Engine DJ Desktop, so I listed them.

Specifically, I was curious if anybody was using Traktor to manage their library, and sync it into Engine DJ Desktop. Mostly because the OP was about Traktor, but I am interested in other scenarios, such as Serato or Rekordbox.

I can only speak for myself here, I use Serato and Rekordbox alongside Engine (although I’ve not even loaded Rekordbox onto my new laptop as I don’t currently use Pioneer) and I initially used Serato to manage my library then sync across to Engine.

What I’ve found is that library import feature in Engine was only ever meant to be used as an initial upload of your library from other software, and not a way of updating. So I now treat both completely separate from each other and load music into each program individually.

I have my computer music folder set up so it’s a direct replica of the playlist/crate structure in my DJ software. That way I can add a new track to my computer and put it in whichever folder I want to store it (by genre in my case), then simply drag that folder into its corresponding crate or playlist. It then updates with any new music I’ve added and it’s there analysed and ready to sync to my performance storage device which in the case of Serato is the computer itself, for Engine it’s either an SSD installed in a Prime 2 or a USB stick I keep as backup.

The conclusion is, if you want to use Denon gear and the Engine ecosystem, you will be in a much better place by simply using Engine Desktop to organise your music.

If Engine desktop falls short of what you need in your workflow, the only real sensible move is to look elsewhere at other solutions. Be it using your Prime device as a midi controller with a laptop, or selling it and moving across to a standalone provided by the competition.

Wouldn’t hold my breath for that. There have been numerous requests on both forums since the SC5000 was released. I don’t think it’s going to happen. My workaround is to use Ableton Link to sync my players to Traktor.
