VDJ to get 'Live Censoring' for explicit tracks in an upcoming update

So an interesting one. Next year, the next ‘thinking out of the box’ DJ tool is a live censoring of naughty words in your tracks. Obviously there’s logistics in this involving an internet connection etc but it is something to add to the feature list for wedding/kids discos that could come in handy.

Will it look at lyrics and position the vocal mute stem at the right time via keyword intelligence. Will it be flawless? Probably not.

Been testing it for a while. Still not perfect but I’m sure the team will fine tune it before too much longer.

Current limitations are that you need a machine capable of stems 2.0 and tracks can’t be batch analysed for lyrics at present.

Its particularly handy if you download a Tidal track to cache you don’t know as it will analyse and censor it before you play.

Add in the fact that with vocal stems you can turn literally any track in to instant karaoke if you have a video output and it definitely has a future as a feature for sure.

P.S. It’s now out of early release and is available as a public build.

Yes it’s been fully released now, it’s not for next year!

The system “listens” to the lyrics via the vocal stem, so it often gets words/phrases wrong, and at the moment it’s pretty tedious to go in and edit the lyrics.

You can’t just copy and paste the correct ones in, because then it loses the alignment with the vocals on the timeline.

The naughty words have to be typed in manually (stored in the settings) and it does a reasonable job of catching them. Obviously you have to know in advance which words might be an issue, and enter every variation - and it can miss muting some, depending on tone/pitch etc.

Isn’t censoring lyics not something which is exclusively for the UK market?

Wouldn’t think so, not playing offensive songs must be a thing in most countries, particularly for weddings etc.

Saying that radio stations in Europe just play the swear words where in the UK everything is edited to death.

The radio in the uk have censored out “you cheap lousy fagot” lyric from the Pogues fairytale of New York song.

Noticed this a couple of years back

I think this graph is telling a lot: Only the curse word from the UK is censored

Presumably because it was created by someone from the UK - where the other words would likely not be censored, because they’re not recognised as such.

Useful - although in some songs, that feature is going to turn them into instrumentals lol
