USB drive format

"All storage media connected to the PRIME 4 should be formatted to either FAT32 or exFAT "

Will this ever change with a future firmware upgrade or is it hardcoded into the hardware?

That’s three different bars I supply hire stock to that have decided against buying a Prime 4 due to this limitation as they get loads of different guests in and have had issues so decided just to buy Pioneer units.

I can’t praise the Prime 4 enough, have one myself and persuaded my regular venue to buy one as they have a steady rota of DJs but I can no longer suggest the Prime 4 for instals due to this issue.

What does Pioneer use then? Ancient FAT?

While fat32 is fairly old hat, ExFat is pretty standard for modern use. Tell the bars to get with it. Are they running video content from VHS? ExFat was launched by Microsoft in 2006, so it should be well adopted by multiple industries by now.

(Fat32 = 1996)

Apple file system is the issue then?

The issue is with Apple formats APFS, HFS+ etc. If the DJs turn up and can’t play then telling the bars to “get with it” is just pointless.

Well essentially not the case. Mac owners should know that the world doesn’t revolve around Apple, despite what Apple would try to push on the world.

Apple will write to non-Apple exclusive formatted drives, such as ExFat, so if there are some DJs on Macs and some on windows and they all want the versatility to play “anywhere” then all the venues have to say is “make sure your drive is ExFat”

It’s much like only bringing in gear that’s the right voltage and plugs :electric_plug: for the venue in question lol

In my everyday use case scenario I always use the native format for the critical files I have….HFS/AFPS for Apple and NTFS for Windows.

Engine Prime already reads and write to AFPS, HFS and NTFS computer drives and external ones (if you can bypass USB bus).

It’s a reasonable request even if it’s read only format on Engine Os - as was advertised at launch of Prime.

PS

Do CDJs support ex-Fat now, used to be only FAT32 and HFS

yes. But telling DJs in advance they can’t play unless they reformat their USB drives is not really a solution

Same goes the other way around, but I understand the “industry standard” problem in this.

I really have no info if other file systems will be implemented in the future. @JWiLL ?

Blaming Mac owners and DJs is all and good but the bottom line is Denon are directly losing sales because of this issue. I’m only a tiny supplier and have lost the potential for 3 Denon Prime sale in the last month so multiply that up and shows the issue is a genuine issue without the need to get into a blame game.

Don’t know if it’s a reply to me, but I’m blaming no one here. I know it’s like asking a Windows user to move to Linux.

You can’t blame Denon either.

I would love Denon, Sony cameras, Skydio drones and a whole bunch of other companies who I use to start using updated formats. So far they are fat32/exfat.

I agree. IMO it’s entirely down to the Mac users. If they’re playing on other people’s equipment, it’s up to them to make sure their drives are in a more widely used format.

Ouh gee, I’m a mac user, and my usb’s are always ex-fat and never had a smallest issue in any venue…

Heh, that format issue sounds funny. We had milions of gigs where djs were from even different countries a d somehow no one came with a usb that is not working in Denon gear. Even when they were surprised with the djs setup (expecting competition decks). And all went well and as planned. No djs had any problems. How strange is that?

I find this very bizarre to have a pack of djs with unsupported or not readable drives… this is very suspicious…

I do find that serato users are guilty of not not using fat/exfat on their USB drives.

But lack of basic knowledge about Your usb stick and how it works with any gear is up to you, or you will blame anyone else for that? I don’t find that way logic…

It seem that people who play back to back on the same laptop and controller don’t have to care.

When the sc5000m first received hid support in serato a lot of people wanted to try out my deck. Some had sticks didn’t work cause they were in the apple format.

I’m thinking this is more an issue of one bar, one DJ, one usb stick, one request for even more supported format formats.

This is very uncommon to use apple format on usb sticks. Most usb’s come already formatted in Fat 32 or ex-fat. So actually, no one needs to change that, unless some very specific scenarios. Why fix it when it’s not broken?

Don’t ask why someone else do what they do. People for some reason just do.

I just observed that the ones with the wrong format were the b2b ones from serato.
