Tomorrowland Mainstage on fire 😨

What a shame :scream:

I just saw that. It’s totally gone now.

Remember that fire a few years ago at the Barcelona Tomorrowland spin-off that also started during the actual show?

As the story unfolds. It looks like the main stage is totally gone. The campinggrounds will open as planned tomorrow. A solution for the main stage is nog yet there.

Well, since its all about the music all they need are a soundsytem, a mixer and 4 SC6000’s.

This is a big blow for the suppliers of all main-stage gear including PA and lighting.

Frank Verstraeten (old-Zillion and long time Pixelscreen owner) stated that no one was hurt, apparently. Pixelscreen used around 37 trucks for all the LED screen builds, but they’ve lost about 1000m2 of main-stage screens (2% of the stock).

It seems the fire started following pyrotechnic tests.

I suppose it was bound to happen at some point anyway, with the constant push to go the extra mile with pyrotechnic effects. It’s better for this to happen before the festival opens than in the middle of it, which would likely have caused panic and possibly even injuries.

It’s still going ahead, with 14 other stages still in place.

Yeah I read that. Amazing !!!

Granted it’s a flammable construction and it’s a way that most portable themed events and stages are built but putting pyros on something that goes up like a tinderbox with so many people potentially around it is insane in 2025.

It’s like those disaster stories you hear about in the past where we’ve had to learn from these things and improve how we plan and implement better practices. I don’t think it takes a genius to work out that if a pyro or flame system failed near a gigantic pile of wood, things take hold rapidly. The Tomorrowland fire in Barcelona was also a rogue pyro IIRC.

The SHM set at Creamfields a few years back could have been equally as bad as they fried the gigantic video wall with the flames. People reported that it was unbelievably hot at the front.

I do like to see it but think how it’s implemented possibly needs a rethink.

@MrWilks

What I find especially absurd is that if you want to open a club tomorrow, you have to go through several safety commissions for regulatory checks to obtain your opening permit. And we’re even talking about clubs that don’t use pyrotechnics.

I’m not sure there are as many checks for this type of festival, which seeks to constantly dazzle by going to extremes. Especially since, as you said, the sets are made of cardboard and are extremely flammable in most cases.

One day, a disaster will occur in which there will be injuries and perhaps even deaths. Perhaps it’s time to legislate and regulate the use of pyrotechnics near this type of extremely flammable installation before that happens.

Hoping that what has just happened will lead to a collective awareness of the excessive use of pyrotechnics at this type of festival.

Belgium is pretty strict when it comes to safety. They have had a disaster on the Pukkelpop festival which has put the attention on all layers of Belgium legislation (and in Belgium that are lots and lots of layers). So it’s pretty strict.

On 18h CET there will be a press conference about Tomorrowland from the organisation, the local municipality and the fire brigade .

A bit more light hearted this one.

It was truly sad to see that stage in flames, but I’ve always been very concerned about the tons of flammable material mixed with electricity and pyrotechnics. I feared this would happen one day. Very sad!

Really cool if it turns out to be true. One report is that Metallica provided the sound system as they own their own. I’m not sure how accurate that is.

Yeah this was stated by numerous sources, I bet it’s legit (and a very cool gesture).

@STU-C light-hearted, but sadly accurate at the same time.

Yeah but no.

Metallica uses Meyer Sound. Tomorrowland, as nearly all festivals, rely on L’Acoustics.

Some Stageco stage elements were used from the Metallica show. I think also the rigs where the speaker arrays hang from.

The LED screens are from Pixelscreen, as always.

We used Meyer on our ships and in the clubs. They are really nice.

When I worked at a UK holiday resort we had L’Acoustics in the main venue and sounded sweet. They pulled it out for a Martin Audio! The Martin sounded nice but still… shame.

Meyer Sound is really great for live music.

L’Acoustics has that punch.

Martin Audio sits in between.

The dark series continues for Tomorrowland, a 35-year-old festival-goer was reportedly found dead on the site.
