- maintain collection on laptop
- use sync manager to fill a stick with tracks and playlists
- go out and play
- insert stick into laptop and use the right button in sync manager to sync changes back to the main collection
Thank you for your time. This is literally what happened. I was editing the years and genres of some new tracks on my PC in the main collection. The same tracks were already on an external drive and were played and edited on the hardware. So the changes were on both drives. I connected the drive to my laptop and first synchronized from the drive using the round arrow next to the drive name. Then I updated the data on the external drive using the sync manager and ejected it as expected. And then I noticed that the data I was editing on the PC was reset. I was sorry to waste my time. Then the next day I launch the Engine application on my laptop and get a message that the application is already running, but it is nowhere to be seen. This is not the first time, by the way. I close it using the manager and launch it again. Everything works and even the missing changes appeared except for four files. Holy chips!
This is logic. If you edit a file in 2 places, which version should your computer keep? You are bound to lose data in syncing processes when you edit data in both places at once… this is not specific to Engine…
So many people don’t apply logic to how they use computers
Yes, I think you are right. Please tell me what logic to follow in this situation? Can a computer not change untouched parts of data? On the equipment we have access only to points, magnifying glasses and grids, but all data changes. Perhaps I am writing incoherently, I do not know some terms, but I hope for understanding of the specialist.
Of you want such detailed syncing, you would need a log, timestamping every change, and handle concurrent changes. For example, if you edit the artist tag in 2 places, and then sync, which change do you want to retain? And the time between 2 syncs is to long, chances of a conflict rise, making it not so userfriendly.
There is cloud software that does syncing, like Google documents or Word when you use it online, but due to the nature of the cloud, changes are synced almost immediately. Even then it comes up with conflicts when 2 people are editing at the same time.
So it’s possible. So what’s the deal? Are loops or grid tags like genre or comment? Why is the artist read from the file when adding to the collection, but not the year?
Its not possible in Engine at the moment. You can always file a feature request, but dont expect this to be developed overnight.
For most of us the one directional sync works fine. If it doesnt, you can take a look at Rekordbox’ cloud function: Never used it, but maybe this does what you want it to do…
Thank you for your patience. I use machine translation and may make mistakes.
