Technic 1210- Prime 4 sound crackling?

Hi there, I currently have my 1210s set up on line 3 and 4 of my Prime 4. I’ve been experiencing a crackling/hum sound and I can’t figure out what it could be. Can anyone help narrow down the issue and provide any options for sorting this?

This sounds occurs when I bring the channel volume up, and if I switch the channel to USB, it stops. I’ve got grounding cables attached correctly. It occurs on both channel 3 and 4 (when the relevant fader volume is up).

I’ve got both decks running in via phono cables and the switches on the rear set to “Phono”. Please help!

Try cleaning the port you connect the stylus to, and also rock the stylus in the Mount slightly as sometimes they are not connected perfectly square to the pins inside the tonearm

Thanks, I’ve tried swapping both the styles, then the headshells around to each deck. Ove also tried giving the stylus and headshell a wiggle as you’ve suggested but no improvement.

I can hear the same hum and crackle through the headphones even when I remove the headshell which I assume means it’s a connection issue rather than tone arm/headshell problem?

Have you got anything else you can connect the deck to, to prove it’s the prime 4 that’s the issue? Work your way up the chain from the needle to the device to eliminate everything.

Once you know it’s definitely the prime 4 causing the problem you can start investigating that.

Good shout thanks, I’ll try connecting some digital devices first and work through the cabling to climate those and the phono connections.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll repost later

Hi, I’ve tried connecting the deck directly to a behringer UCA222 unit and listening via the monitor/headphones. There doesn’t appear to be any crackling or feedback.

I’ve then tried running the 1210 directly into the “Line” input on my Prime 4 on Channel 1. Obviously with no “phono” setting this means there is no preamp, so the volume is very low, but if I turn up the volume on the unit to check for feedback, there isn’t any.

This would suggest it’s something to do with the phono switch settings which are on both Channels 3 and 4. I only seem to get the noise when running the decks into those channels and switching on the phono switches on the rear.

Can anyone think what this could mean?

Agreed, definitely sounds like an issue with the phono inputs on the Prime.

Just as one extra test, is there a usb lead connected to the prime 4 ? If so, do you get the same issues if you unplug that usb lead. In fact, if there’s any laptop connected via any cables, check to see if the sound issue still continues with the laptop completely removed l, including any laptop power supply plugged into the same power extension/multi-gang leads
