Suggestions for Engine OS based on my way of working

First of all, congratulations on the software and congratulations to the development team for it, in order to continue moving forward. In my case, I have a series of peculiarities that I would like to see included, perhaps it is that I still do not know how to use it well at all.

I have a library of more than 400 GB of music, which I have separated by year, and then, by musical styles, for me it is a bit annoying, every time I update within the same year, for example 2024, that I have several folders or playlists, every time I update songs from several folders, when it comes to synchronizing them, I have to worry about checking that I have selected the playlist correctly, to then synchronize it with the table, and in the case of when I delete songs the same, is there an option to select the folders and that every time you open the Engine DJ on the PC, those folders are synchronized with the playlists, and you only have to synchronize the music with the table?

I think this option is not possible, but for me it would be super useful, really.

Another interesting option is to see the complete collection and be able to locate with some filter or something the songs that have been deleted or cannot be located and appear in red. If there are 100,000 songs, it is not easy to locate which one may fail to synchronize.

I have a similar problem that I’ve solved by abstracting the files that are imported into Engine DJ Desktop from the actual files themselves.

For me, my media is stored in the following directory structure:

Collection/LABEL_NAME/ALBUM_ARTIST/ALBUM [CATALOG_NUMBER] [MEDIUM]/# ARTIST - TITLE.ext
Collection/Anjunadeep/Yotto/Cooper's Cup [ANJDEE271D] [Digital Media]/01 Yotto - Cooper's Cup.flac

While I store the files in Collection, I also have another directory named MIXIT. Symbolic links from files within Collection are made into directories within MIXIT, based on the year of the import. So, all files I discovered last year are in MIXIT/2023 while all tracks I discover this year are within MIXIT/2024.

When generating these links, I keep track of the last time a generation occurred, and I evaluate any file that has a modification date after the previous run. For me personally, these links are also only generated if the file has a specific metadata key:value that I set to mark the track as one I wish to export.

This allows me to keep a massive collection of music, some of which I’d never mix but still enjoy personally, while being able to pick which tracks I want to export into Engine DJ Desktop. Directories within MIXIT based on the year help prevent any single directory from having too many files, though I might start breaking up each year into quarters in 2025 to aid with that even further. I have playlists within the Engine DJ Desktop collection that match this directory structure (ie: Collection/MIXIT/2023, Collection/MIXIT/2024)

Then, instead of relying on a file’s location, or importing playlists as specific directories, I rely on Smart Playlists to generate the playlists from which I actually mix. So, instead of opening Collection/MIXIT/2024 and selecting tracks from there, I have playlists such as Collection/Genre/Techno which is a Smart Playlist of all my Techno tracks. I also have Collection/Sets where I store normal Playlists of customized styles or sets I want to perform, which are created manually by me finding tracks within the Collection/MIXIT playlist and adding them to the playlists found within Collection/Sets.

Now that I’ve typed this all up, I’m not exactly sure if it’d help you to keep your existing workflow, but maybe it gives you some ideas on what you can accomplish. Instead of moving the files around based on Genre, maybe you can just key off the Genre tag or something like that.
