Stems on SC6000 & LC6000

Hi everyone,

I’ve purchased a license and just started testing Stems on my SC6000 and LC6000. I have used stems on Serato and Traktor and think it’s pretty comparable. I’m quite pleased with the results, even though I had to pay £9.99.

My only upset is that I have to use a USB stick to play my tracks with Stems. Usually I connect to my network server, and load my tracks / playlists from there. I have some tracks on my server created with Stems, these are not available in tracks over the network.

Am I doing something wrong?

What’s up @dbaxter,

I tested it yesterday also. I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong. It appears that STEMS is not playable via server. It could be an issue due to the size of the file (approximately triple the size of the original file).

Hi Mixlive,

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate what you are saying in relation to the the file size. Indeed this is 3 times the size of the original file.

I’m in IT so have a good understanding of the issue this may present, however I don’t think this should be a barrier for playing tracks with Stems over a network, mine is CAT7 with gigabit switches, so transfers data at 1Gb per second.

I did have some trouble originally getting Engine DJ to see the network, but found a solution online using mapped network drives.

As I stream my Mixcloud weekly shows, I have no desire or need to keep loading my “stemmed” playlists to a USB drive every time I wish to use them.

There must be another reason and/or solution!

Perhaps someone at Denon could respond, please, thank you.

It may not be an issue for your setup, but the typical user connects to their laptop via wifi. Your setup is an outlier and I’m sure you can appreciate the Engine DJ crew evaluating and making decisions based on the majority of the end user’s networking capabilities.

Perhaps after some successful testing a network solution will come but what’s being release thus far from Denon is leaps and bound above the ‘competition’.

I think the Prime devices are all fixed at 100mb on the Ethernet port.

Hi @mixlive

Yes you are right there about leading over the competition and I’m in a position to comment too, having used many other software and hardware options. I’m in the camp of Denon over Pioneer, its just a shame people continue to pay the ridiculous prices Pioneer demand for inferior product. One day the table might turn in Denon’s favour. They just need to keep up the innovation.

I also appreciate my setup is perhaps in a minority.

I’ll spend a little more time on the issue and see what I can come up with. You got me wondering… I can view my “stemmed” tracks in Engine DJ on my studio PC, but these versions may not be saved to the network (e.g. in the same place or method the original file is accessed). I’ll look into that?

Hi @0ddw0rld

Yes I think you’re probably right there, but that still shouldn’t be a problem, just that the larger “stemmed” file will take a bit longer to load.

This may be an issue for some DJ’s but not in my application.

On my setup a standard 6 min “house” mp3 track takes approximately 1-2 seconds to load over the network, suggesting the SC6000 network adaptor to be 100Mbs and not capable of higher speeds.

Stemmed tracks are made next to the Engine database folder.

Stems are not available over the network (yet). Regardless on how you’ve made an unofficially supported network location available. They simply need to be packed via sync manager at the moment.

Yup! This is true

Need a little help here please

Purchased the license, run the tracks through Engine Dj, Dragged tracks onto the Stems tab, and exported through device manager back onto USB.

Nothing working.

If somebody could share a step by step guide that would be great. Because I don’t see how paying for this feature has influenced engine dj on my pc whatsoever. How does the program even know I’ve paid for the stems.

I’ve created a folder “playlist” within the stems tab but the SC6000 just reads them as normal no options to Stem anything

Did you check the video?

Stems rendering in Engine Desktop is free. You pay for Engine OS devices (other than Prime4+). Engine profile e-mail address must have been used when buying the stems add-on.

Why? The stems playlist is made when you add the stems processor in settings->library. It’s kind of a system library folder, that you don’t need to change / create / do all sorts of funny stuff with.

Hey, Reece.

Yeah I’ve watched all the videos and pretty much followed it step by step.

• Updated Engine • Purchased Software • dragged/right clicked tracks to stem tab • exported tracks to drive through manager • Inserted UBB into player

Tracks are not showing any indication of being able to stem separate. This is why I even created a playlist folder within the Stems. And that doesn’t work either.

I’ve gone back and forth many times.

Just can’t establish what I’m doing wrong. I was also under the impression that you have to pay for the update with the SC6000 players as the feature was only free for stand alone units

Driving me crazy

E-mail address the same?

Hi everyone,

So an update on my original post here.

Regardless of what I try and do I haven’t managed to find a solution to playing “Stemmed” tracks over my network, so I’m just accepting these have to be played from a USB stick or an internal drive fitted into the SC6000.

To those having trouble with the functionality of Stems on their media players, such as the SC6000, it working a treat.

Granted it doesn’t make Engine OS look any different once you have installed Stems. As far as I can see the is one extra switch in the setting that allows you to turn on or off Stems lists". It only looks different once your playing a “Stemmed” track.

It did take me a while to install. Just a little trial and error. Once you’ve paid £9.99 for a stems license, you need to ensure you are logged on to your Denon account on your PC. Ensure that your SC6000 is connected to the SAME PC, either by WIFI, or in my case ethernet.

Login to your account on the SC6000, and if you have a Stems license and it is NOT installed on your device, it should prompt you to Reboot, say yes to this and wait. Once the device has rebooted it should allow Stems operation.

From here you need to use Engine DJ to create your desired tracks with Stems (ensure you have downloaded the free Stems upgrade/drivers for Engine DJ). Once the tracks have a Stems version associated with them, they display an “S” symbol.

I added the “stemmed” tracks I wished to mix to a playlist and exported these to a USB stick.

I inserted the USB stick into my SC6000 and the changed the source from my PC to USB stick and started go load my tracks from the playlist. “Stemmed” tracks will load with an “S” displayed on the device.

Once playing, hit the “Cue” to switch from cue to stems, displaying 4 pads, representing the 4 separate components on the tracks. You can then switched these in or out to suit your mix.

I’ve already been pretty creative, and I have to say its “bloody brilliant” and definitely worth £9.99. Well done! I’ve used Stems on Serato and Traktor, and its just as good.

Particularly love the clear display indicating which stems (Vocal, Melody, Bass, Drums) are on or off.

If I have only one request for future development, it would be for 4 separate waveforms on the display, switched on or off, in sync with the pads (as Traktor have on a PC), definitely assists during a mix. Denon’s waveform currently doesn’t change in anyway with Stems pad selection.

Hope this helps someone, happy mixing :+1:

Clearing up some incorrect steps above. If people would actually view the available YouTube videos about Engine stems, there would not be “trial and error”.

You only need to buy the stems add-on using the same e-mail address as your Engine profile e-mail address. You could even use a smartphone of your grandma.

After that login with your Engine profile account on an Engine device. Might be even a Numark of your grandpa. Reboot. Done. No need to connect the device to your pc.

Hi. They do not need to be packed using the sync manager. Just go to any list, e.g. on the built-in disk in Prime. Select all the songs and add them to the STEMS directory, and the software on your laptop will do the rest for you. Personally, I don’t use the Synchronization option because I almost lost my entire library of recordings on the disk.

Yes. Only if you have the main collection on your internal drive of the Engine device. I do too, don’t use sync manager either, but most users will have their collection on the pc.

correctly: press HotCue to switch between HotCue and stems mode (press HotCue once again to activate stems mode), than the left 4 buttons are assigned to stems

I have a collection both on the Prime’s internal drive and on an external drive connected to the laptop… a 1:1 disk matrix in quotes  It works flawlessly, especially since I also use other controllers and software such as VDj or MIXXX
