Setting up HotCues with 32 beatjump

Hi there music passionates.

I am the owner of a Numark Mixstream ProGo for almost a year and lately I’ve been diving deeper into it and start playing it more and more.

I came to a disappointing conclusion after playing a bit with a Traktor controller when realised that my console doesn’t have a 32 bit jump feature in order to set up easier hot cues directly in the console (being a stand-alone one) and not needing to open up my laptop for doing that…

Do you know if implementing this feature is on the roadmap of potentially being released/implemented in new versions of EngineDj?

I’ve read some suggestions from other users such as to repurpose existing controls, such as using the Pitch Bend buttons for Beat Jump functionality. This would require a firmware update from Numark to implement.

Does any one have more details into that? I’m confident it will a very well appreciated feature for lots of users.

It would also be life changing for me and would stop me from selling my console and upgrade to a Traktor honestly…

Search the feature request section, I think there is already a request in this sense that you can vote for.

Indeed these units do not have a beatjump key unlike slightly higher-end units such as the SC live series or the prime devices.

You can imagine that if the entry-level models had the same functions as the higher-end models there would be no point in buying the higher-end models.

It’s a bit like going to Audi and asking them why after buying your car with the first trim level, you don’t have all the equipment of the last trim level.

Or just get an SC Live 2 or 4 and benefit from many other improvements, like better I/O, a tilted screen, separate Loop Encoders and those Beat Jump buttons.

Product differentiation is a thing, which Gaian has correctly pointed out. For their price, the Mixstream units are already packed with features, and you can’t have everything.

You can join an existing feature request voting topic, but mind that devs have to prioritize, so there is no garantuee.

Hi Gaian.

You’re totally right, it would be unfair to ask for premium features from a car when I actually paid for the standard version of it and i get your point of view and agree with it.

The SC Live 4 is ~1100 euro compared to ~750 euros that I paid for my Numark 1 year ago, not much of a difference but still notable. However there are other consoles at the 800 euro price range like the Traktor S4-MK3 and others that have this feature that I’ve requested included.

My mistake was that I probably haven’t done enough research last year being at the beginning of my journey with this, and took a decision based on my level of understanding from that point.

I’ll wait a few more months to see if they would still be able to offer a workaround, if not I’ll probably upgrade as suggested by you🙏.

Hi Skaratak,

Appreciate your feedback and thank you for the upgrade suggestions. I’ll probably have to start thinking serious at this if there’s no potential perspective showing at the horizon in the near future.

Yes the Numark has already a lot of nice features given its entry level category status and I’m aligned with what Gaian mentioned as well.

I’ll search for the right thread on the community and vote there also for this feature.

I’ll probably write a letter to Santa as well given the Jolly season cause last time I wrote to him was 30 years ago and he made my wish come true.

Who knows, maybe my letter will reach him again and me and other Numark users might find a nice present under our Christmas tree this year:grin::christmas_tree:.

Keep in mind that even though they are in the same price range, an s4 mk3 and a Mixstream Pro go are not the same product at all and each meet completely different needs and expectations.

The first is just a simple controller, which cannot be used independently, and without a computer, apart from serving as a doorstop, it is of little use to you. It is just a simple midi remote control with buttons.

The second is a completely autonomous unit, with a touch screen, an embedded quad core processor and a few gigs of RAM, it also has an audio circuit, a built-in battery and even speakers.

I think that when you analyze things from this angle, even if it lacks a few features such as beatjump, you definitely get more for your money with your mixstream pro go, than if you had bought an s4 mk3. Actually it’s more the s4 mk3 that’s a bit expensive for a simple remote with buttons and a built-in sound card. And you still have to consider the price of a decent computer to run it on.

If beatjump is essential to your workflow, consider the SC live 2 or 4, but you’ll lose the battery

Even the battery is not an issue. Just grab this one:

XTPower15600, gives about 4hrs of playtime including the speakers. And if the battery dies, you just replace it (which is much more tricky with an integrated one).

And as Gaian pointed out, one unit is just a controller, the other a full all-in-one system.

This is a good point indeed.

Gaian, Skaratak really appreciate your suggestions and honest feedbacks.

It helped me put things a bit more into perspective and I’ll help me find out what’s my next move here.

I’ll get back on this thread with updates or additional questions if I decide to upgrade.

Thank you once again!

In reality you don’t have physical beatjump buttons but if you think about it there would be a simpler solution to implement than assigning the beatjump to the pitch bend button

The team could simply assign the beatjump to shift + Loop Encoder and link the beatjump value to the selected loop value when no loop is active on the deck

  • Set the loop size with the encoder, for example 16 beats
  • Hold Shift and turn the encoder one notch to the right and you move forward 16 beats, and when you want to go back 16 beats hold Shift and turn the encoder one notch to the left.

Each additional notch in one direction or the other allows you to move forward or backward relative to the defined beatjump value.

Would be much more relevant from an ergonomic point of view in my opinion than assigning Beat Jump to the pitch bend button.

And would be easy to program:

If active loop: Shift + Loop Encoder = Move Loop

If Inactive loop: Shift + Loop Encoder = Beat Jump

Shift + Loop Encoder has no action assigned outside of an active loop at the moment.

And this is also how traktor works on many controllers like the X1 for example, the loop encoder is used both to enter a loop / move the loop, but also serves as a beat jump with shift when no loop is active.

Very interesting point of view Gaian. It would definitely ease up the process and seems to be something that could be done quite easy.

You’ve convinced me, you have my vote if you’ll ever candidate for president :)).

Hopefully the right people within the dev.teams will hear you and read this message.

But I’ll try to escalate this via a ticket as well and see if me and other users might get lucky with this one and also share your thoughts on the other existing thread with the the same topic to increase its popularity.

So appreciate once again your feedback!

I may have made a mistake, I’m not sure if there is a loop encoder on the mixstream pro go.

For some reason I was convinced there was one, but after checking on a picture of the unit on google, there doesn’t seem to be one. I think I’m confusing it with the prime go/go+ which do have a loop encoder and already work that way as stated on page 18 of the prime go manual.

Looping & Beat-Jumping

To create and activate an auto loop, press the Auto Loop knob.

To set the auto loop length, turn the Auto Loop knob to select the number of beats: 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 4,8, 16, 32, or 64.

Note: You can set the default Auto Loop size in the Preferences menu. When a track is loaded, the Auto Loop size will be automatically reset to your preference.

To deactivate a loop, press the Auto Loop knob.

To move the loop, press and hold Shift and turn the Auto Loop knob while the loop is activated.

To double or halve the length of a loop, turn the Auto Loop knob while the loop is activated.

To beat-jump through a track, press and hold Shift and turn this knob when the loop is inactive to jump forward orbackward in the track by a pre-determined quantized value.
