There’s no dumping going on, just a lighthearted comment on the Serato 4.0.0 improvements. I have Serato on my computer, alongside Traktor and Rekordbox too. I do see some dumping on VDJ though, which is why I’m defending it.
I’m sure if you posted on the NI forum about DVS with Traktor, you’d get plenty of commments from users…
The best software is, in any case, the one that makes your workflow the easiest and meets your needs.
There are many different workflows and mixing styles. From the DJ who does basic beatmatching to the DJ who wants to explore much more creative and complex, sometimes even completely experimental, things.
Serato is great for those who want plug & play, but won’t necessarily meet more experimental needs.
Serato isn’t really an innovative leader these days; they’re simply following trends, rather late to the game. Applications like DJay are much more innovative, introducing new technologies like the fluid beatgrid, etc.
VDJ is ultra-versatile and highly customizable, which can be confusing because it sometimes gives the impression that you have to be a geek to use it, given its ability to create complex scripts. But it’s more flexible once you master these possibilities. And it’s also generally more open than Serato.
Traktor is a shadow of its former self; it remains reliable at what it does, but even more behind than Serato.
Personally, I don’t see anything absolutely revolutionary in this Serato update, which justify a major update.
Colorful boxes and an emoji rating? Seriously?
Small improvements here and there, but where is the big feature that makes it seem like there’s really a generational leap between version 3.xx and 4.0?
My advice would be to have a scroll through the comments on Mojaxx video, the comments are fanboy central, and doing exactly that, dumping on Serato, which despite these protestations still manages to be by far the most popular performance software on the market.
I was referring to this thread, which I assumed you were also doing. I did actually include the word “here” in my draft, but removed it, thinking it was superfluous….
There are probably just as many routines being performed on other software, or even just with turntables. Experimental doesn’t necessarily mean doing DJ routines.
Popularity, well IMO it’s the fact that Traktor, Rekordbox and Serato come bundled with a large number of hardware devices which helps in that respect, whereas people have to buy VDJ.
Nah definitely not referring to your (lighthearted) comment here, just the general concensus online that every time Serato do something there are hundreds of people sticking the boot in.
One day, in a parallel universe, people might just be able to say ‘hey, well done guys, thanks’, and we are rid of this vile culture of negativity on the internet.
They’ve even basically admitted to needing to overhaul the library on their social media post and they are still getting abuse, i wonder how many of these people would stand face to face with the devs and say it to them when they aren’t hidden behind a keyboard.
Yes it’s definitely a thing. So many people who wouldn’t have the nerve face to face, but anonymously behind a keyboard they let rip.
I like to play a game on YT, looking for the most negative comment then clicking on that person’s handle to take a look at their channel. So often it’s just an empty channel, set up purely so they can rant. No name, no contact detail, no videos.
There’s a thread on the Serato forum posted by a guy who has started a Youtube channel. His channel is basically how much does Djay destroy Serato, and why is Serato so bad etc etc. Anyway his thread on Serato forum is ‘Djay pro 5.1, the Serato killer’ followed by lots and lots posts dumping on them, obviously on there you can swear etc so the language is far worse than say here.
The thread was started in April and he has now posted congratulating everyone on making Serato add these features by posting in that thread. 2 things i take away from it, first being how detached from reality do you have to be to think any company reads through a load of abuse and takes any notice, and secondly how naive do you have to be to think that they only started working on rewriting their whole code base 4 months ago and on the back of some anonymous rants on a forum, its more likely to be 4 years ago this journey started, than it is 4 months.
That reminds me of a web site I found a few months back, set up by a guy who was for some reason anti Gilles Peterson and anti Acid Jazz, claiming that there’s no such genre and it’s all some kind of conspiracy by Gilles. He was going on at great length trying to prove his claims.
It was so obsessive as to be humourous, how one guy could go that far…
Ah, I found it. Check out soulboytales dot com (Jay Kay also comes in for flack).
Hahaha, a bit like that Sync website that someone set up and posted on Reddit, a whole website dedicated to telling old skool DJs they are all morons and some other stuff. A much more valid argument than slating GP however, thats just insane, the equivalent of saying Pele wasnt very good at Football.
Actually I previously succeeded to add a streaming track to a local playlist on a sc6000. Not sure how I did it, was it via the prepare list and then drag it to a playlist, or did I use the history, cant remember. But when you connect your USB stick back to your laptop, the streaming track will be shown in your Engine DJ library. Were you cant do a whole lot with it, because Engine DJ cant stream….
But all in all I had the feeling I found an unsupported loophole. But I proved the database system can do it, the user interface only needs refining for this…
I don’t have a streaming subscription anymore. If you play a lot in dark basements or remote festival meadows without WiFi or 4G the whole streaming thing is pretty pointless anyway But if you abuse the “edit playlist” button, I am sure you will find the way
I think it will be put to use, but I can only assume the vast majority of the development of this has been done way before they entered the picture. By the time you factor in the conception of an idea, design, initial build, E2E testing, fixes, retesting, more fixes, private beta testing and finally this public beta. I wouldn’t be surprised if this has been on the go for at least 4yrs, especially as they said they have recoded the whole library from the ground up.
