When i backspin on the SC6000, it grinds to a halt quickly, the tension control works, and is on the lightest setting. When i hold the player upside down and spin it’s smooth like my other SC6000.
When i grab the platter with a hand on each side, there is a bit of direct vertical play, so i’m thinking / hoping I can get to the bottom of the platter and find a loose nut i can tighten up underneath?

No, its out of warranty, but I was recommended a service / repair centre to contact by my local dealer. Apart from that, deck works great, just no festival backspins 
Check my recent post. Probably your bushing are dry and need to be re grease with lithium grease.
This is not a bolt. The shaft are held by a lock ring. The sound come from the brake or the worst thing it come from the sensor rubbing the sensor disc.
