SC5000M and Remote Library

Hi everyone

Been away from things for a very long time, so apologies if Im treading on well worn ground here.

I have always used my 2 SC5000M players in standalone mode and have prepared a USB stick in Engine Desktop etc. Ive recently updated everything Engine related to v4 and am keen to make use of the Remote Library feature.

I realise I can connect the players to the same wireless network as my laptop. However, I would VERY much prefer to cable them instead of being wireless. How can I connect them both to a laptop though to enable remote library access please? I see documentation saying to use and ethernet cable, but the ethernet port on both players is used to link the 2 of them together. Im a bit stumped…!

Looking forward to hearing your recommendations

Thanks

I have both of my decks and my laptop routed through a network switch. I can either use my library on the laptop or the music on the SD card in player one. Easy peasy.

So literally cable from each player to the switch. Laptop to the switch. Then an uplink to the switch from your ethernet wall port or similar? Both decks are still linked too?

Yup. You can either do it as a self contained system and just have the 3 things on the switch or connect the switch to your network also for internet access or streaming from services.

I need to be able to stream really, so would need internet access. I can give a spare unmanaged switch I have here a feed, then connect both players and my laptop to it. Hopefully this will still link both players and allow me to stream.

Also, are you in standalone mode on your players, or computer mode?

It’s stand alone mode and you select your laptop library as source, instead of whatever usb or sd media device you might have connected. It’s pretty straightforward once you have the players and laptop connected to a switch.

It doesnt seem to be working. The laptop isnt showing up as source. All there is to choose from is a USB I have plugged in to the SC5000M and the Sampler Content.

Ive taken an internet feed from the wall socket in my room to the unmanaged switch. Ive got an ethernet cable from that to my laptop. Internet on the laptop is confirmed working. Ive then got another cable from an SC5000M to the unmanaged switch. Player is in Standalone mode and Engine DJ is running on the laptop (although not sure if that matters or not). Any ideas?

Not sure why it’s not working for you. The only difference is I have them hooked to a managed switch on my home network. My MacBook Pro shows as a valid source on both decks.

Ive also got a managed switch in here too thats already part of my network. I’ll try the players in there over the weekend and see how that gets on.

You haven’t mentioned what version of the software and firmware you’re using. I know the feature for reading your library off of a laptop is fairly recent. Are you possibly running an older version on the decks and software? EDIT, Nevermind, I see that you’re running v4.

Ah man, Im having no luck here. Tried USB from player to laptop. Ethernet from player to managed switch. Wireless on player and wireless on laptop - same SSID of course. None are resulting in my laptop showing as a source on my player. I feel a support ticket to InMusic might be needed… :frowning:

Does Ethernet knock off wifi on the players?

Alright, let’s break it down. Wire your 2 players and laptop to the switch. Turn off wifi on both decks. Have a usb of tracks in deck 1. Can Deck 2 see the usb and load tracks from deck 1? If deck 2 can see the tracks on Deck 1 then we know your switch is working, at least between the decks. Next, launch Engine DJ on your laptop. If everything is connected correctly, you should see your laptop as a possible source on your decks.

I was thinking the same

Maybe the wifi needs to be disabled on the players

Hence my previous comment

I have never done hardwire remote play.

The tracks load pretty fast on wireless already

I’m going to try to set it up now and see what’s what

Easy

That’s a cheap 5 port tp-link

The players are connected via ethernet to the mixer.

So I went from the mixer to the hub (yellow cable) and the black cable is from laptop (using a thunderbolt dock)

I connected with wifi turned off on the players and laptop.

Half way through the short test, I turned on WiFi and stuff was still talking to each other.

But I spotted some bugs…some tracks refusing to load…bugs r us

Cheers for the suggestions guys. So, I started from scratch again and got the little unmanaged switch out. Did as you suggested @SirReal and wired both players to the switch. Wifi was off on both players. I inserted a USB in player 1 and sure enough, it showed up on player 2 with the network icon at the side of it. I could select tracks, play them etc all as normal, just as if I was using a USB and the players were connected directly to each other via an ethernet cable.

I then fired up the laptop and started Engine DJ. Absolutely nothing changed though. It didnt show up as a source on either player. Each port on the switch that is populated has a flashing activity light as though ‘something’ is working, but the laptop isnt appearing as a source to select on the players.

I just had a brain fart! I checked my network settings on the laptop. After going through various things, I noticed the network was configured as a guest/public one. The second I changed it to private, my laptop was asking to connect to the players. I can now use them both to pick and play tracks from my laptop.

Big thanks to you for taking the time to help me out. Much appreciated.
