Rekordbox Library on External HDD, Denon SC Live 4

Hi everyone,

I am due to do a part exchange for my Pioneer XDJ RX for the Denon DJ SC Live 4.

I have always been Pioneer but liking the Denon units & Engine capabilities within their standalone units.

However my question is this, I currently have a 3TB external hard drive that holds all my music files in folders, this hdd is the primary drive for my Rekordbox Collection also.

If i was to insert this external hard drive in to any of the Denon Standalobe units, would it read all the folders/tracks fine?

Would it read the Rekordbox Library & then i would be able to use it like i do with my Mac with Rekordbox open using Link to the RX to have access to my full Rekordbox Library tunes?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, i am definately new to Denon DJ & Engine.

Thanks

Gregg

If the drive is formatted in FAT32 and works on your RX then it should work on the Engine OS powered players.

Engine Dj for Mac is free to download. You can do some testing.

If it works with Engine DJ on Mac then you can use same drive on the Engine OS players thus having your entire 3TB available.

Thanks fpr your replies, i will do some testing.

The eternal hard drive is formatted to ExFat, would this work so that when i connect it to the SC Live 4 via usb it would read all of the music tracks in the folders i have put them in for example?

Correct! exFat will work.

  1. Plug the drive to mac
  2. Start up Engine DJ
  3. Import the Rekordbox library to engine collection
  4. Eject the drive
  5. Plug the drive to SCLiVE4

Brilliant mate,

I have just completed putting the whole collection on Engine on my Mac so all the tracks are there including the playlists I created on Rekordbox.

What i was doing on my Live Radio Shows was hooking up my mac to the RX via Ethernet (LINK) then connecting it to Rekordbox so that i basically had my whole collection to use whilst live so could play sets that the listeners enjoyed without having to stick to a created playlist if you know what i mean.

I am new to Denon DJ, always been Pioneer.

Getting my SC Live 4 next saturday then going live with it.

I am also thinking of subscribing to Beatport so that i can use tracks on there too.

Beware, you will not be able to use it that way with SC Live + Engine DJ because Engine DJ does not have link mode.

Yeah i thought that.

This is why i am thinking of connecting my external hard drive that has all the mp3s themselves on in folders, which is the same hard drive that has my main Rekordbox collection on.

I have just transfered my entire rekordbox collection via xml file to Engine DJ on my mac so all the tracks are there, however they arent showing folders like Rekordbox does where the actual mp3s are, its just the entire collection on the Engine DJ software.

what do you mean by “folders” ?

Picture of what you are referring to as folders.

Hello mate,

Sorry to be confusing, but forget about Rekordbox or Engine DJ Software.

What i mean is Hard Drive on Mac for example has Folder Named “Music” in that music folder is then lots of sub folders with different names eg House Jan 23, then that has the mp3 files in.

So for example would a denon standalone unit be able to read an hard drive that has folders with mp3 files in?

Thanks

Gregg

Yes. You can navigate to folders on any connected drive if you need to.

one of the icons on the SC4Live screen will be for “folders”

Absolutely brilliant mate,

Will it auto analyse the tracks for bpm, key etc?

You will NOT see metadata (key, bpm, etc) if you are browsing the tracks through the folder view.

So yes, the unit can see the folders but it’s not like using DJ software.

Thank you for letting me know mate.

I think what i am going to do is create Playlists in Rekordbox & add them to usb sticks to use on the SC Live 4.

Thats probably the solution for me.

Has anyone used Beatport on any of the units?

If so what is it like?

When you load the track to a deck it will.

Fantastic, cheers mate

You can’t use Engine OS on Mac like the Export Mode in Rekordbox does.

Hi all! I’ve been reading all your former discussions, and would like to ask a final question to be certain I’m understanding properly : I can totally continue using Rekordbox to prepare all my sets while using SC LIVE 4 DENON to play live ?

Will I get any trouble not using Engine ?

Thank you a lot!
