Rane System One: Headphone Signal Bug? No Split Cue!

I have two Rane System One units. With one of them, I’ve had the issue several times where the headphone signal could only be heard on one side (the right).

  • To rule out a defect in the headphones, I tested the same pair on the second System One as well as on other devices. Everything was fine.

  • To rule out a defect in the headphone jack, I tested various headphones on both the large and small jacks. The problem occurred on both jacks.

  • To rule out the possibility that it was caused by the Split Cue, I set the switch to On/Off, turned the Master/Cue knob, and also inverted the audio output in the settings. Time and again, the sound could only be heard in the right headphone.

  • I’ve also tried to see if the choice of sources makes a difference. Unfortunately, that didn’t work. The problem persisted even when using Serato DJ.

The last time this problem occurred, I was somehow able to fix it by chance. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case this time. The problem started with version 5.0.3. Even after updating to 5.0.4, nothing has changed. Before that, I’d been using 5.0.3 for many weeks without any problems. On my other System One, everything runs smoothly on 5.0.3.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? There aren’t any options in the settings to adjust the audio output (pan) for the headphones, are there?

The large and small headphone jacks are linked inside to the same mini pcb. (It only holds the headphone jacks)

That headphone pcb has a tiny multi pin plug connecting the pcb to the main

It’s more likely that it’s a one off hardware hiccup on your rane exclusively - if it were firmware then everyone would be having the same issue

I didn’t give up and checked the headphone jacks again. Now it’s suddenly the other way around. No signal on the right anymore, but only on the left channel. I’ll take the device to the store on Monday under warranty.

If your headphones have a built-in Mic they can sometimes not get the signal properly, you have to move them in/out slightly to make the right connection. I recommend using an adaptor that only has TRS connections if your headphone jack is TRRS.

Hi Mike, thanks for your input. I use standard DJ headphones and have tried out a few different models to rule out the possibility that the headphones are simply broken.

The device is now at the retailer and will be sent to Denon. Let’s see what they find out.
