Prime 4+ with external sampler

Hi all. I have been djing with my prime 4+. It IS a great hardware. Very Happy with my purchase.

Now id like to add same samples to my mixes but out of inside sampler in prime.

I have been using virtual dj samples through chnnel 3. Tracks in virtual dj are sync with prime with ableton link but samples only sync with track in virtual dj. So if i play only the samples do not sync with prime tracks.

I have found a workaround taking a loop in any track loaded in virtual dj and put gain to 0 so when i triger a sample goes in sync with prime tracks.

Id like to know if there IS same software to play samples from a laptop, launchpad with ability to sync from ableton.

Or same hardware sampler (not too expensive) than can get tempo etc… From ableton link.

Ableton live IS out of range. I only need play same sound, vocals, etc but if i play a sample in loop id like to do It in sync with track played on prime Channel.

Thanks in avance. (Sorry if my english IS not too good)

Link enabled products (software and hardware) are listed on the Ableton site

Thanks you. Im going to see if thats what i need.

What about akai MPC studio mk2??

177 euros in amazon

Hey, I’ve been playing with Ableton Link, but one issue I have is that the longest-playing connected device becomes the master. This means that after playing one or two tracks, my instance of Ableton Live becomes the master. I’d really prefer if the decks on the Prime 4+ could maintain this status.

Yes, it’s cool that if you wanted, you could change the BPM of the tracks playing on the Prime 4+ from Ableton Live, but I’m mostly using it as a sequencer, enabling/disabling different rows of sequences, and specifying at which time intervals the different sounds should be played.

That being said, when a DJ controller is involved, I think there would be some benefit in restricting control and functionality of Link-connected devices, and maintain the controller as the primary device.

Just mentioning in case with the experience you’ve had, you’ve had similar thoughts, and maybe have solved these problems (or maybe you don’t see them as problems). Curious your thoughts.

Thanks

The concept of Link is that nobody is in charge. Everyone in the session/group has the ability to start, stop or change tempo.

Quote from the Ableton site: While others play, anyone can start and stop their part; or start and stop multiple Link-running applications at the same time. And anyone can adjust the tempo and the rest will follow

I have been testing this system. Play only samples on Virtual dj, and add the sound from virtual dj into prime 4+ in channel 3 while tracks are mixed on Prime hardware channels 1 & 2. I haven´t lost control of BPM on Prime hardware. If I move pitch then virtual dj synchronize at newer BPM. Ableton link run ok.

I don´t want to change the BPM in Virtual dj. It’s the opposite thing. I want to change the BPM of samples to sync with music played on Prime 4.

But the samples played in Virtual dj only synchronize with a track loaded on virtual dj while this track is played.

So I need a way to play samples synchronized. Voices, claps or other short sounds have no problem, but I´d like to play loops. In this case, sample sounds unsynchronized without having a track loaded on virtual dj.

I have been looking for a way to do this, and visit the link posted by PK (THANKS AGAIN), and I think Akai MPC studio MK2 can do the job. So I´d like to have same opinions about this hardware.

Thanks.

If you’re looking at USB pads with computer software, also consider the Maschine Mikro.

Yes, that’s been my experience. That’s why I’m asking if anybody has any workarounds or tricks to do stuff beyond what Live states it does, or does by default.

People can be very innovative and discover new ways to use tools outside of their purpose, and I imagine I’m not the only one with some of the desires or feelings I have for Live, so I was asking the OP, someone who has been experimenting with it, to share their insight.

Your response is basically “Hey, what you said you’re having problems with is true”. I know it’s true; I’m trying to work with other creative people to work around that, and to voice my opinion that there could be other workflows in case someone is listening for such feedback.

Reading what you’re stating, I thought that maybe Virtual DJ didn’t support Ableton Link, which would be why it’s not syncing, but I checked and it says Virtual DJ does actually support Ableton Link.

Have you tried simplifying your setup and confirming that Virtual DJ is correctly joining the Link session?

Also, many times with Samples, they aren’t really “Sync’d”, they are “Quantized” to some degree, and only if you’ve enabled the setting. For example, I think you can see why someone would want to be able to choose between “Play the sample EXACTLY when I press it” and “Play the sample at the nearest beat to where I press it”, this second option having quantization enabled.

So, maybe instead of sync settings, you should be evaluating quantization settings for when you play samples.

Also, when you say “sample” do you mean a short, few second audio sample, or are you using samples to play much longer audio? Like are we talking 1-5s audio, or stuff that is and longer than 30s?

Looking for info of Maschine Mikro. Thanks

Ableton link runs OK on virtual dj and sync ok with Prime 4, but only with tracks. Not with alone samples. No problem with shorts (It doesn´t mind if these sounds out of tempo). Kick Loops played alone always go unsynchronized. No way to resolve this with quantization.

No - my response (to your claim that one device “becomes the master”) was saying that’s not the case. There is no master in Link land.

Ah, thanks for clarifying.

Hi, you have a couple of options:

  1. something that manages ableton in you laptop (mikro, novation, MPC)
  2. an MPC as they are part of the same family of companies (inmusic) and they play well with Prime: bonus no computer
  3. apps on iPad like Koala Sampler or Loopy Pro, cheapest option if you have an ipad already … bonus: no computer

A couple of links to help you:

Thanks you for your support to everybody. I think i’m going to get Akai MPC studio MK2. I 've been testing the free software and I have enough system to run It. And I can pay 177 euros for this in order to complete the workflow I usually do.

I Will make a video to share to you when all of these are configured and running.

Thanks to everybody.
