Standalone stems are already here. Once you buy the stems addon, you can play stems on a whole series of Engine based units.

The Rane System One will improve on this slightly with onboard stem extraction, but it will still take time to process.

Interesting to know that customers at your residencies are asking you to use stems. :thinking:

Thanks for the feedback, but let’s be realistic here. Suggesting pre-rendered stems to a DJ working 5 nights a week with an 120GB library is like telling a photographer to edit 1.000 RAW files one by one before they can even see them. It’s about workflow and efficiency.

Technically speaking, the current SC LIVE 4 (v1) is fundamentally incapable of real-time, on-the-fly stem separation for three clear reasons:

  1. CPU Architecture: The v1 uses the aging Rockchip RK3288 SoC (a 2022 standard). Real-time isolation requires massive DSP (Digital Signal Processing) overhead. Even with Engine DJ 4.6, the buffer can’t handle the mathematical calculations needed to split 4 layers of audio without massive latency or audio dropouts.

  2. RAM Constraints: The v1 only has 2GB of RAM. Real-time separation needs at least 4GB (like the Rane System One/Performer) to keep the stems in the temporary buffer while the UI and the library search stay responsive.

  3. Thermal Throttling: Running a ‘Neural’ algorithm on the old chip would cause it to overheat in a club environment within minutes, leading to lag -something you can’t afford during a live set.

As for the comment about ‘customers asking for stems’—with all due respect, that misses the point of DJing entirely. Customers don’t ask for techniques, they react to the energy. Stems aren’t a ‘customer request’, they are a tool for DJ creativity. It’s about the ability to create an instant acapella or a live mashup in the moment, without being tethered to a laptop or spending 20 hours a week pre-rendering files at home.

I am holding off for the SC LIVE 4 Series II (or MK2) precisely because I want a professional tool with an 8-core CPU (likely the RK3588) that can handle the modern demands of Engine OS standalone. I am not looking for workarounds. I am looking for the next generation of hardware.

Maybe InMusic will surprise us, be there are a lot of doubters that standalone devices will have real-time capabilities anytime soon. Certainly, the quality won’t be as good as that done on more capable attached computers.

For now, you can use the current SC Live 4 (and, of course many other controllers) with Serato, Virtual DJ and, somewhat with Algoriddim djay Pro. The latter two have the best-rated stems.

If the RK3588 could handle real-time stems, don’t you think the Rane System One would have them? I wouldn’t hold my breath for an SC Live 4 MK2 suddenly adding them.

Your comment also feels generated by AI, as the RK3288 is not a 2022 standard, it’s a chip from 2014 that has been in Engine OS devices since 2017.

Even the new Akai beast, the £2500 XL can’t do real time stem separation. We’re not there yet.

On standalone, Pre-rendered files is what we’ve got. Traktor still doesn’t have on-the-fly separation. Rekordbox stems are still terrible. None of the “industry standard” equipment has on-the-fly stems. Even with VirtualDJ some users prefer to pre-render and have files on their drive.

I just find it amusing when DJs claim that they “really need” something, when actually it’s more a case of they just want the latest cool & trendy function. :thinking:

DJs don’t “really need” stems, or RGB waveforms, or auto-gain, or the same reverb as Pioneer (etc etc). It was possible to fill a dancefloor without any of that stuff decades ago, and it still is now. :man_shrugging:

No computer, no effects, just pure music.

The Rane System one is very authentic with the motorized platters and remids me on the old days without having to hang the decks from chains to stop everything jumping.

Loads of function rooms up here with wooden dancefloors. Playing RunRig Loch Lomond at the end of the night was impossible as you got 2 minutes in and everyone started jumping and the needle skipped off. Even CD players didn’t help much. Getting my first DJ laptop in 1999 solved the problem instantly.

Also, if the collection is a mere 120GB whats holding you back to prerender the entire lot? Afterall beatgrids are prerendered as well and nobody bothers about those.

The beta firmware of Prime 4 plus offered live stems - but it took about a minute to “stem” a 4 minute track - with a helpful stems head line showing in the waveform showing where in the track the stems process had got to. You could perform stems play on any part of the track that was to the left of the stems head line.

The other limitation of live stems processing on the prime 4 plus was the number of stems created, also the quality of the stems created was fine for playing over the top of another track, but sounded a little bit grainy if played unaccompanied.

Pre-rendered stems is what’s offered on Prime - I wouldn’t be surprised if the control of stems got adjusted in future firmware (eg: fade stems in and out rather than on/off each stem, and maybe being able to route stems through EQ knobs and FX bank - but I’d be really really really surprised to see live stems processing on prime hardware without pre-processing / pre-gig rendering , or higher quality stems, or more stems splitting eg: 8 way splits

They said on board stems were coming for the System One early 2026. We’re now in April and that’s no longer early.

On an older gen MPC it took 6x longer than the track length to process. 3x on newer MPCs and 2x on a Push 3.

The P4+ was advertised that way for a long time. What did we get? It’s not bad, but it’s not what the P4+ was advertised to be.

Some people in here seem to be stuck in the past, so I am not going to argue with them. However, as a professional buyer looking to invest in a lightweight standalone Denon system right now, I have to be clear: Buying a device with a 2014 chip in 2026 is objectively a poor investment. Erik actually made my point even stronger, if the SoC is 12 years old, then the need for a Denon sc live 4 Series II (or MK2) is even more urgent. Denon DJ has always been a pioneer. It is time for a new Live 4 and a new Prime ! This is not just about Stems,which some dismiss as a ‘trend’ but I view as a modern explosion of creativity,it is about overall performance. A modern chip would drastically improve search speeds, system stability, and UI responsiveness for those of us working 5 nights a week. I am not looking for workarounds or pre-rendering solutions from the past. I am looking for the next generation of hardware. I also agree with Homeland101’s point. The fact that InMusic has not managed to deliver stable onboard stems even for the Rane SYSTEM ONE yet,despite promising it for early 2026,suggests they are hitting significant technical roadblocks.I don’t want to end up disappointed like the P4+ owners It is becoming obvious that you can not force modern, heavyduty processing like realtime stem separation onto hardware that simply was not built for it.

The so-called “next-generation” chip embedded in the System One is an RK3588, a technology dating back to 2020. A few of us here would have preferred InMusic to use a chip powerful enough to truly process stems in real time on the fly, without any pre-analysis (even onboard). But InMusic seems to have decided otherwise, probably for reasons of both cost/economies of scale and compatibility with the older RK3288 chip for EngineOS.

So if you were hoping for a chip with technology from 2026, I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed, as the next generation of Denon/Numark devices will likely use the same RK3588 chip.

But some will tell you that it’s still much more powerful than what Alphatheta offers in terms of chips (and they’ll be right).
