Macbook late 2012 with no more hdd space

Hello, good evening, I have a MacBook Pro late 2012 with 128GB of space. I have all my music folders stored there, but I’m running out of space on my hard drive. The hardware I have is a Prime 4+, with a 1TB hard drive.

What’s the best solution to free up the space I’ve been taking up on my Mac and keep my playlists the same way they were?

Thank you.

Buy a new hard drive for your MacBook.

Then backup your current MacBook drive to a 3rd one using Time Machine… after that install the new hard drive and do a fresh install using your Time Machine backup to restore your music and create space.

This is the wrong forum for this though, you need to be on apple forums seeking advice on how to do the above.

Sorry , but i think there is no possible to upgrade the hard Drive.

There should be on a 2012 model, my 2015 model allows it

Yes there is: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide

It’s only a few years later that apple decides to solder solid state drives to the motherboard. Just buy a 2 or 4TB SSD and replace it, and restore the backups described above. Or buy a new machine, because I wouldn’t be surprised if soon Engine DJ 5.x won’t be backward compatible with a 2012 machine, forcing you to use an older version of Engine OS. If you are fine with that older version though, go ahead!

EDIT (due to STUC remark below): you are already in the unsupported area, one step further is things effectively not working…

(Just speculating about the 5.x thing here to make a point….)

That’s a good point actually Johan, engine 3.0 is only compatible with something like Catalina and above, that 2012 won’t support it

Maybe I’ll choose to upgrade the machine since the latest version of the soundswitch (2.9) no longer allows me to update with my operating system.

An M1 MacBook Air might be the best deal for you, just make sure you get one with a good hard drive capacity.

You could even wonder why you still need a laptop (versus fixed computer) or even a Mac (vs PC). You won’t be playing out with it (whole point of Engine OS), and the big advantage of mac was always the superb built in sound card drivers. Everything is possible (although personally I would stick with mac)

Beware though that migrating a Engine database from mac to PC isn’t trivial… do your research about this in advance!

Check out Daisydisk.

I use it every now and again to figure out where I or my mac is being wasteful.

Example: “Hidden space” has yet to be released by Time Machine.

This is the way.

Some folks have reported some success with installing new MacOs on unsupported Macs.

But I agree get best to buy the cheapest M1 out there…get a Samsung T7…live life

I ought to give this a go! Thank you!

I’ve recently done that on my 2012 MacBook Pro. It was not difficult and works well
