Just a heads up for anyone still using a Time Capsule to back up your Mac data, they are going to be unsupported pretty soon so probably a good time to think about changing how you use Time Machine.
Obviously backing up data is of paramount importance in our line of work/hobby space, lose your digital music and you’re pretty screwed (unless you have shed loads of physical music of course ) so making sure you’re still doing it is essential.
Im currently switching mine over to a WD NAS drive I already own, it’s pretty easy to set up and get going.
Im now looking at seeing how I can repurpose my Time Capsule for use as something else like standard network storage etc.
@STU-C Interesting you should mention that. I don’t use Time Capsule, just Time Maxine with a connected drive. Last April, when I had Engine DJ sync issues, I tried rolling back with several Time Machine backups. All were said to be “corrupt” when I tried to restore them. It seemed isolated to EDJ and those “backups”. Other backup files would restore when testing them.
Luckily, I also have rsync backups and those give no issues. In the end, I could never solve the sync issue, so I switched to Lexicon DJ for that.
Don’t know if this helps or not but from what I’ve been reading up on, it’s to do with the legacy file system Apple used for the backups, so maybe it might be how your drive is formatted?
in my case I just turned on the ‘Apple backup’ setting on the WD dashboard and then allocated some space for it. I will monitor and let you know how I get on though as this is my very first backup today.
I did the wireless thing, then wired to a NAS (Multiple DS systems at my home), but ultimately, it made the most sense to attach a 4TB T7 Shield to my computer directly. Due to the nature of the random reads/writes, restores took forever and a day with up to 12 spinning 7200RPM EXOS disks in my NAS, even with 10GbE.
I’m so happy withe the T7 Shield option, that going back to a NAS is a non-starter.
