Internal SSD disappeared during live gig

Hi there dj-friends, While starting my gig last saturday on my Denon Prime 4, i first had issues connecting to tidal. (Just discovered this was to do with a change in the subscription for the dj-add on option of 9$ a month, so thats fixed today.) However on top of that, suddenly my internal hd was gone and not findable anymore. I rebooted my prime 4 about 3 times, but it was completely gone so had to play the whole gig from 1 back-up USB which i luckily had.

Few days later starting my prime 4 my internal hard-drive is visible and useable again completely. Ive had this issue once before, with the problem of not being able to acces my 100GB of internal music while mixing live. Now i’m not sure to take it out or trust it wont happen again… Does anyone know how this can happen, how this can be prevented or what the issue could be? Can’t afford this more often on my wedding gigs this summer. Looking forward to your reply and advice! Cheers! Remco

Hey @Remco.mill

This could be a connection to the drive (not plugged fully into the drive) or a faulty connector (a loose wire within the connector). I’d plug it in and wiggle the wire to see if it disappears again.

The other option is to check the drive isn’t faulty. Do you have another one to swap out? This could help diagnose if the drive itself is at fault.

It could also be a faulty SSD. Just spitballing @Remco.mill . I would look into ensuring the connection was good (connector is fully seated), and also perhaps check that 1) Your’e using ExFAT as a filesystem and 2) the filesystem isn’t “Dirty”.

This definitely should not happen at all.

Most likely a loose connector - sometimes some thick window insulating tape (the spongy stuff) fixed into the drive bay at the opposite end from the drive connector, can stop the drive from working loose from the connector.

Cheaper SSDs can fail more frequently than the more expensive branded ones, although none of them are “ever-lasting”. Also SSDs don’t tend to give much advance warning of failing unlike hdd which often used to show hints of impending failure.

You’ve done the right thing though, by having a backup… if you’re charging for gigs, you should always have a backup - a backup ssd will be a fraction of your gig fee

@remco-mill I would add that if your drive is back up and running, back it up! Beyond that, check your connections to see if you can recreate the issue. If it does, get in touch with support to document and investigate further to ensure it is not a Denon hardware issue. Thanks!

Once you have the Tidal upgrade do the following if you did not see the post back in April, as for your SSD, if you have the internal one make sure it’s connected correctly, I lost those little screws you use to hold it in place on the cover plate, moved my Prime 4 to a gig and it did not work. Found out the next day it was the connection. I’ve tried to buy those screws and have never found any as of yet. I now take a small screwdriver with me to remove if it comes loose again. Respect for the back up.
