Hardware issue with Engine 4.2 (Prime 2)

Hi all

Last night at a gig was my first chance to properly road test Engine 4.2 and I encountered some issues with my Prime 2. The left channel was behaving erratically in several different ways.

Firstly the play and cue buttons had an intermittent lag to them, up to a second for the button press to register, the same applied to a hot cue marker. From my not 100% observations they all seemed to be files not analysed for stems (I had a mixture of tracks in that respect)

Second issue was around the stop time dial, when turned completely to slow I pressed the play button and the track stopped immediately, rather than slowing down.

Final issue was in grid edit, the platter usually adjusts the grid but in his case it scratched the track back and forth, even when using the side of the platter.

None of the above was in Vinyl mode, all in ‘CDJ’ mode.

Ive since downgraded to 4.0 on the OS and 3.4 on the Desktop and removed all Stems from the drive, id rather have a less featured stable OS for gigs than risk having that again. It made basic cuts a pain with the delay and also stopped me using a feature I use quite often in the stop time dial.

Just want to add something else that was an anomaly, and could be related to grounding (all the issues above could be attributed to grounding on the platter),l. I plugged into an extension lead that was already Insitu at the bar, and it had other stuff plugged in like phone chargers with cables on the floor. I usually use my own surge protected extension so this might be another factor.

I would try 4.2 at home in an environment you can control, especially with AC power grounding. I’m going to guess the facility you were at only had safety grounding and not a mesh bonding network so the ground was dodgy from the panel. I’d retry 4.2 at home in a controlled environment.

Yeah it’s a fair point, I never use the bars extension usually and always use my own which is higher quality and surge protected, and I’ve never had the issue prior. They use the cheapest extension you can get so I imagine there’s not a lot of protection, coupled with phone chargers and charging cables laid on the floor etc.

I need to do a proper set at home to eliminate it being a hardware issue.

Status update, using 4.0 and plugging into my own surge protected extension plug the unit worked flawlessly for 4.5hrs at my gig last night. Next step is possibly to upgrade to 4.2 and try again, although I’m reluctant to because the unit is doing everything I want it to right now.

Me too, I have stuck with 4.0.1 as with all the new functions and features (well stems). I have seen nothing but trouble and stuck units etc. by example the first unit I upgraded to 4.2 killed it to the point Denon DJ / Refunded my money for the unit and was marked as non-repairable. so not sure what that did.??

As a rule, the unit I now own, (Is the 3rd) Works fine on 4.0.1 so Im going to stick with this upto the point my player will work on a newer update, that has been tried and tested by other users.

If its not broken, don’t fix it lol
