Firmware Update for Prime Controllers - Necessary if latest Engine software installed?

Hi probably a daft question but I can’t find the answer anywhere…

If I’ve updated my Prime GO+ Engine software to latest version do I also need to update the firmware or is this done automatically?

Also if there is a Firmware update available will the controller notify me as it does with Engine software updates?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi, you need to have your device connected to the WiFi in order to update on device.

There are some considerations when going past version 4.0.0 as to which desktop and OS versions will work, and whether you will be able to downgrade firmware or not.

Check the release notes for both here.

Hi - yes I understand this and know how to upgrade the engine software - but my question is whether firmware is automatically updated on the standalone system with each Software release?

No, you need to control that and update manually.

OK -

Can you/anyone point me to where the latest firmware file is located then please? - when I go to downloads link you posted above and select and select my unit it just downloads the latest version of engine software… hence my point of whether the firmware is included in this? Many thanks

There’s 2 tabs on that webpage, one for the software, the other for the OS.

But the absolute easiest way to upgrade is to get your device on WiFi and then load it from the update menu on the device itself.

Thanks but I think you’ve misunderstood my question - as originally stated

I’m asking about the controller firmware is part of the overall OS update…

I can’t answer you then sorry, as I don’t understand what you’re trying to ask.

I’ll let someone else chime in.

Yes, the updates contains all needed parts.

Asked previously - but to be clear, I’m referring to the standalone FIRMWARE and if it is automatically included in the OS updates or needs to be done seperately?

If I’ve updated my Prime GO+ Engine software to latest version do I also need to update the firmware or is this done automatically?

Also if it needs to be done seperately and there is a Firmware update available, will the controller notify me as it does with Engine software updates?

Many thanks in advance!

There are no other updates, the Engine OS update contains everything.

Some updates have two parts. One is an OS update (the software layer that you DJ with) and a hardware update (this is the firmware of the device’s internals).

The hardware firmware is in various versions and it is applied just after an OS update. Generally you’ll see that the OS will restart just after updating and it will then apply a control surface update. This updates the hardware.

I think the last one was at the time of the added Bluetooth (to activate the Bluetooth radio).

They are automatic and from memory they’re not stated within the release notes. You don’t have to worry about doing them separately as they arrive as one package.

I fail to see why this needed to be a separate topic. Merging in a moment.

Firmware is part of the OS.

Ok. There’s quite a few terms or names given to the different members of the Prime and Engine Family.

Engine - could be considered a “language”… the Prime models of decks, like the SC5000 and SC6000, and the consoles like the Prime 4 and Prime 2 and also a few of the Numark consoles all “talk” Engines language.

Let’s think of “Engine” a bit more…. Inside the decks and consoles, there’s Engine Operating System …. “Engine OS”. This is also referred to as firmware. Engine OS firmware is currently up to about version 4.3

Then… let’s look at the other half of the Engine family; “Engine DJ” - this is the software which is a program you would install on your Windows PC or an Apple Mac computer.

So …. There’s Engine OS, the firmware inside your Prime or Numark DJ equipment

And there’s Engine DJ, the computer program loaded onto your home computer or laptop.

When you download any version of Engine OS, you don’t automatically get the latest version of Engine DJ. Similarly, when you download Engine DJ, you don’t automatically get any of the Engine OS firmware.

if it helps to remember this fact in a real-world way… there’s a different OS firmware made and tested for every different Prime and every different Numark model of DJ equipment ….

this takes into account that SC models don’t have mixers, but Prime 4, 2 , plus, Go, etc DO have mixers … all models have different colour display needs … eg: 4 decks on a big screen, 2 decks on a medium screen etc - one version of firmware (OS) wouldn’t match all hardware.

Generally …. If you’ve got Engine DJ version 4 point anything (on your PC) then you should have Engine OS (firmware in your Prime or Numark) of version 4 point something too. If you have version 4 in some things, and version 3 in something else, you could get all sorts of wierd database issues and odd behaviours

Yes, software updates sometimes have firmware updates as well, so you don’t need to (and can’t) update firmware separately

I think the development team should perhaps consider a unified update system for Engine OS with a single file regardless of the hardware it’s installed on.

A bit like Nvidia’s, which contains all the drivers regardless of the Nvidia graphics card you have and detects and installs only the driver corresponding to the card you have.

In such a scenario, the novice user would have only one Engine OS file available for all platforms, and during installation, the driver identifies the hardware identifier and installs only the OS specific to that hardware.

Obviously, we would probably have a larger file, but I think this would perhaps make things easier for the average user.

Is it really that difficult to select your device from a dropdown and click Download? Or press Update on the device?

Not for most of us, but for some users it might make things easier. Just look at Facebook groups and see how many users don’t even know they can update via Wi-Fi.

Laziness imo. They take the time to go on Facebook groups, but instead they should be reading a manual or search Google.

I get the remark, but nVidia could also merge GeForce and Quadro drivers into one package. Yet they don’t.

I think the bloatware issue is less of a problem for laptops with direct cheap harddrives inside, whereas on former denon dj (pre-prime) models, the “infinity” candy sack of upgrades had to stop as the firmware storage space filled and filled and eventually ran out.

It is true perhaps to say that Denon DJ (especially with over-the-air updates) have created a certain percentage of “who cares what happens”, people who see the words “update available - do it right now?” On their prime screens, and click yes…. Yes … just before a bride and grooms first dance, Yes, just before starting a New Years Eve triple-pay gig, Yes, just before their 2 hour slot on real or internet/streaming radio … and the infamous, yes… just as the boat the idiot was on, started sailing away from the shore wifi signal he was getting the update from … good grieeeeef some people really do need a check-up from the neck up
