I just think in this case, the expectation to add something that largely sits behind a hardware button seems a little misplaced.
Taking a Quick Look at the Mixstream, they cost around £700 despite including built in speakers and ability to use with batteries. My Prime 2 was £1200 in a sale, there has to be some differentiation between products to account for that price difference.
If I was buying a Numark device over a Denon device id be looking at what compromises have to be made to get it into that price point, then deciding whether I can live with those compromises or if I need to save up some more cash to get the more expensive item. Lets be honest here, the number one reason people are looking at the Mixstream devices over others is the price point, sadly however, many want to have their cake and eat it when it comes to features, and it just doesn’t work like that.
Ive been looking at 2 channel mixers lately. Id love the Numark Scratch to have hardware FX, 8 cue pads, the ability to add FX post fader with vinyl, have digital screens etc etc, because the DJM-S7 does, but one costs £500, the other costs £1300… so should I head to internet and bemoan the fact all this stuff is missing, or do I realise that there are reasons behind the cost difference.
P.S. im going to be doing that with the girlfriends TT when I buy it from here, add CarPlay/satnav using a code.
They know we code the vehicles. My service partner always ask before service if they plan to update the firmware. So i can return the headunit to stock before they run their update otherwise it could lead to bricking.
I think it stems (no pun intended) from the smartphone/computer generation where they are so used to seeing software/firmware updates that add features, they expect it to happen to everything, and for the updates to come thick and fast regardless of need.
On another forum, people complaining that a product is obsolete because there’s not been a new firmware for X months. Well maybe it doesn’t need a new fimrware because it works as is?
It’s annoying for sure. I use Shift + spin the jog like a mad man to get around.
I understand the need to differentiate a cheaper product vs a more expensive one but I highly doubt there is a significant cost reduction from removing beat jump - so they are artificially reducing quality of life in order to promote people to upgrade. That doesn’t sit quite well for me IMO.
Would you have rather that inMusic didn’t include the professional XLR balanced master outputs (since it is a entry level gear/brand) to keep the product differentiation on a hardware level instead of software?
There are a lot of reasons to hate inMusic, this is kind of a last one on the list.
You’re extrapolating - I never at any point said or even insinuated that I “hate” inMusic because of this decision. Just that from my perspective as someone who works a good deal on product strategy, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth when a company makes artificial cuts that make a good product less desirable.
Cutting hardware would yield significantly more cost savings compared to cutting down on software which has already been developed. From my perspective as someone who never uses the XLR outputs, I would prefer saving $50 if that also meant I could get beat jump (which again - has a marginal cost of $0 to Numark).
You said earlier that you understood the need to differentiate products across the range from lowest to highest - so what’s the problem?
If you use beatjump then it’s up to you to check what the product can do before purchasing it. It’s not just Denon who do this, and it’s not just hardware. The same is true of all sorts of products from many manufacturers, both software and hardware.
These forums are hilarious. It’s almost like any opinion short of declaring that everything inMusic makes is a 10/10 perfect product gets criticized.
I bought the Numark knowing there wasn’t beat jump, and I have a workaround for it. The lack of beat jump is not a dealbreaker, nor is this the feature that would get me (or most people) to upgrade to a SC Live 4 / Prime 4+. So it feels like a strange omission at best and a crafty & ineffective exclusion at worst.
All I am pointing out is that there is a missed opportunity to add the function.
Well now you’ve added information that wasn’t in your original post. People can only respond to the info provided.
Fair enough if you bought it knowing beatjump wasn’t there, so with that knowledge plus the fact you understand differentiating, why moan about it not being there?
It’s one of the things that differentiates it from the higher tier products, you knew about it, you understand why it’s not there, so… ???
Ah I understand now. We should never ask for anything that wasn’t in the original spec sheet. I hope you reply to every other thread on the forums with the same vigour and passion.
Hell, we could probably shut down the whole forum since half the posts are feature requests anyways
No…that’s not what I said. Browse the forum though (or the internet in general) and you’ll find so many posts from people who believe they’re entitled to updates for anything and everything they buy. They buy something that can’t do X then jump online and demand an update so that it does X.
In some cases not even features, just people moaning because their product hasn’t had a firmware update since they bought it.
There is a difference between demanding an update (and you are throwing that term very loosely IMO) and pointing out there is a basic functionality that could be implemented with near zero marginal cost to InMusic. A feature that exists in basic controllers that cost 1/10th of the price. Not like anyone here is asking for stems here.
Once again though, if you knew the feature wasn’t there when you bought the unit, and you understand how products are differentiated, why keep on about it?
It’s “not a deal breaker”? Your responses imply otherwise.
Making statements about how it’s a basic thing, and wouldn’t cost anything, or be easy to do, is also typical of the type of posts I mentioned.
To be clear here - we’re not talking about a unit that never gets updated. We recently got an update. I also never asked for any of the improvements there but we got it anyways. That’s great, I will never not praise that.
However let’s work with the assumption that Engine OS and the Numark MSP will continue to get updated in the future. Are we not allowed to have opinions in respect to what might be on that roadmap?
Beat jump on the Prime range is hardware based with physical buttons. Some hardware don’t have these buttons so they forgo this feature.
Now the question really is how this can be done, seeing as the Engine OS screen layouts are pretty much the same across the all-in-one consoles. If they were to add beat jump for just the one Numark device, would all the users that have physical hardware buttons see these new on-screen buttons taking away more on-screen space and duplicating the function?
Could this be achieved any other way? This would be a more constructive conversation… just how it could be implemented and highlighting to the development team what it would look like for everyone.
