Can the engineers fix the scrolling in Engine DJ? when i scroll down on my mac trackpad using 2 finger scrolling the playlist tracks also slide to left and right as you release and scroll again, I find myself always having to scroll down and to left to stop the playlist tracks from sliding left and right. RB and serato, down is down only and if you want the list to go left or right to see column info you have to stop and move fingers left and right. right now Engine Dj software seems loose on scrolling and any sort of horizontal movement while scrolling down, shifts the tracks. hope that made sense, lol. i can screen record whats happening if need be.
I’ve been using Engine since it came out in 2017, am a trackpad user and never seen this as a problem. I’m not trying to invalidate your experience, just saying that it doesn’t seem out of the ordinary for data views that have an X & Y scroll parameters.
I use quite a number of content creation apps, from Da Vinci Resolve, FCP, various code editors & IDEs, photoshop, debuggers and they all have X & Y scroll capabilities.
It makes me wonder if your hand gestures have loads of X movement, when they probably shot not?
here’s a quick video comparing Rekordbox to engine trying to scroll up and down. Rekordbox stays on point the entire time and Engine shifts left to right unless I go really straight down, programs compensate for a little left and right movement and lock in straight usually until you really want to move left or right with an obviously trackpad movement in that direction. Not a big deal, just an observation I noticed immediately once I started using engine
and the fact that you can’t use the keyboard letter to jump to tracks means you constantly are scrolling to get to the middle of lists and so on. I should be able to hit like “S” to jump to tracks that start with S
One of the things I should share is that I’m a UI software engineer and can explain what’s going on under the hood.
(things are about to get a bit nerdy here).
Some apps like Recordbox have a bit of rigidity to them when you begin to scroll in one direction or another. It’s like they lock one dimension (X or Y) when the scroll gesture kicks off the scroll movement within the scrollable view. This lock persists either entirely until the scrolling gesture for that dimension stops and a new gesture begins, or the user pushes the scroll in the second dimension enough to break the lock tolerance.
From my experience, Engine’s UI actually functions like many applications with a grid view, where a “grid view” is a table of data like a spreadsheet, and users are able to freely scroll in the X or Y dimensions without any of those artificial scroll dimension locks in place.
UIs that function similar to Engine (I do hope the following videos are playable within this forum):
Finder:
Mixxx:
Google Sheets:
All of the above is not to say that what you are experiencing isn’t frustrating, I imagine it is. Hell, there are TONS of things that frustrate me about Engine. I’m just trying to say that the tolerance for scrolling isn’t broken, it’s just different than what you’re used to.
If you want to see / experience a UI whose grid view scroll tolerances are just intense, install Mixxx and set it up with 20-30 songs.
LMK if the above videos aren’t playable, I’d be more than happy to repost in youtube.
