it has often been said that Engine DJ is for preparation only. But a few days ago it was just too hot, carrying around vinyl records at 33° C is not fun, so I took my laptop with me instead and used Engine DJ in Dual Decks mode for mixing, which worked really nicely.
From the laptop the USB audio went into my Roland MX-1 mixer, which offers some effects and a mysterious (but actually cool) mastering, and from there I send the audio into the Xone mixer of the location.
What was different: I did not use headphones and I could not pre-listen the tracks. But I know these tracks good enough, so that this was not a problem. All grids were prepared before and I had to use the sync for beatmatching, for obvious reasons. Gain was missing, but I did not really need it, on only a few occasions I compensated this by using the EQ and channel gain of the Xone mixer ⦠I did not feel limited very much, Engine DJ offers two decks and a cross-fader, which will be the basis for most of us vinyl DJs.
On the positive side: I tried a few settings of the mastering on the MX-1 until everyone, who was in the room, agreed that setting 5 sounded great. My impression was, that the stereo field sounded much wider and spacier, the mids and highs were clear and lovely and more present, I had to take out a bit of the bass on the Xone though, it was a little too boomy.
Using no headphones made me feel much more connected to the actual sound in the location, the music and the overall vibe.
Verdict: Yeah! Engine DJ is cool software.
