Hi everyone,
After upgrading from the latest version 4.3.4 to V5.01, it takes a long time to start up. It stays on ‘checking drive’ in the bottom right-hand corner for ages.
Syncing has become a real nightmare:
‘Calculating’ now takes three times longer than before. It used to take a few minutes, now it’s well over fifteen minutes.
Syncing takes twice as long. It used to take 30 minutes, now it takes over an hour.
But after syncing, it takes another 20 minutes before the drive is released.
All in all, the entire process takes an hour and a half, whereas V4.3.4 took half an hour.
Why has it become so slow?
Could it be a bug that’s causing all this delay?
Startup of Engine DJ 5.0.0 (PC-version) looks good now. The Monitoring area shows some checks and after a few minutes it’s ready.
But the bad performance of the Syncing to the internal drive of the P4 stays.
Version 4.3.4 took 30 minutes. Version 5.0.0 nearly 2,5 hours.
Cleaning up the database does not improve the situation here.
Hopefully, the developers will come up with a solution soon.
Try formatting the internal drive then do a fresh clean sync of your library/collection, but before doing that ensure you have re-analysed any files if you’re switching to RGB waveforms and also completed a ‘run disk cleanup’
After that, do your fresh sync to the internal drive, ensuring you have an appropriate cable (USB-B type 3.0 i think it is)
The internal drive isn’t the problem, as the backup drive connected directly to the PC has the same issue. The problem lies with the new PC software, version 5.0.0.
Im just offering you a step that is rarely mentioned in these posts (formatting the drive and doing a clean install) because its something i do regularly and especially after DB change (like the changes made on this release) so it is a fresh start with a new DB.
I never have any issues with my drives, their speed or the speed of sync manager, so surely me offering steps that i do that i cant see being done by others would help to resolve the issue?
Ive also done extensive testing of Engine desktop 5.0 too, and it is working as expected at my end.
I’m not trying to sound like a jerk, but just saying “it runs slowly”, without additional data isn’t helping much. There is a lot of complexities in the “why” Engine is running slowly:
CPU
Available RAM
Storage type & speed
Storage Format
How the storage is connected
Even any issues accessing data in said storage (retries for bad blocks of data are a blocking operations masking as “slowness” for computers).
Complexities of the database (where data is imported from, iTunes, Serato, Traktor, etc..)
On the bottom right of Engine DJ, there is a “Click to Expand” progress indicator. Click that.
I followed your advice and last weekend I formatted the internal SSD. Then restored everything (over 61,000 tracks). It took me two days to get it up and running, but unfortunately…
Engine DJ V5.0.0 takes again a long time to synchronise (Export): over two hours, compared to Engine DJ V4.3.4, which took a total of 30 minutes.
Resuming:
V5.0.0
Calculating: 30 minutes,
Exporting: 60 minutes,
and then it takes another 30 minutes to release the drive.
I’ve reverted everything back to V4.3.4. (PC & Prime4) and I’m so pleased.
A new entire synchronisation action was complete in half an hour, including calculating, exporting and releasing the internal drive.
This downgrade action also took me a whole day, as there’s quite a difference between the two databases. For example rebuilding the tracks graphics and several playlists that had become jumbled up after the restore for some unknown reason.
on a side note, I think part of the long times also might be to do with the new file system structure for images, if these are big files, it can also take even more processing etc. SO I have heard.
On another side note, this is one of the reasons I am still running 4.0.1 OS & Engine 4.1 I think it is (on my other Mac). Running Catalina lol SO not even able to update that baby. |
SO far I have only sean in the updates are Streaming related, Stems, and now the new fancy waveform colours (Look great, but not worth the trouble I feel).
I can still use my system SC6000 every week fine so not going to update it until they add something like the ability to create playlists from the Prep list,( Still not implemented, which is a great shame)
But looks like your sorted, and indeed this restoring stuff can take days…
