Engine DJ 5.0.1 - lost SSD on Prime 4+

Just got back from a trip and updated my prime 4+ to Engine 5.0.1. Unfortunately, It’s not recognising my internal SSD at all. I’ve removed the drive from the port, replugged in and nothing. Anyone else had this issue from the upgrade? InMusic Team, is this something you would have run through your tests pls?

That wasn’t a problem for me. Even though it’s a hassle, do you have a USB-to-SATA adapter so you can connect the drive to a PC or Mac and check whether it’s even being recognized—or if, unfortunately, it’s simply broken?

Another option would be to switch the P4 into computer mode. If the drive still doesn’t show up even then, that’s usually not a good sign. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean anything definitive—only by connecting it to a PC or Mac can you truly determine whether the drive has merely suffered data loss or is actually defective.

Thanks U-w-B. This has never happened on any other upgrade. I had a quick search for the USB to Sata cable but that’s gonna need a bit more of a hunt. The other issue is that I’m needing a repair on my USB B port as that popped out so even if I can get to computer mode I have no way to communicate with the drive until that’s fixed at the end of the month. I’ll hunt some more for the cable. Drive was absolutely fine before but I guess it could have gone pop and it’s just timing.

Of course, things can always go wrong, but honestly, I don’t believe there is a problem here related to the update.

I’ve actually had an SSD die in my P4+ as well—shortly after I had removed it from my P2. Coincidence? Yes, I think so.

If your USB-B port is defective, that is, of course, frustrating. While it can be replaced, it requires someone who is truly skilled at soldering and has experience doing so.

The other ports should all still be functional, so you should at least be able to continue working using a separate drive. The P4+ certainly has plenty of them, and the rear ports can also be used to connect drives.

Just warming up a SD card now so I can see all is ok. Good news is I have a proper repair being done on the USB B port so the Prime 4+ will see the Dr at the end of the month. In the meantime, I’ll get on amazon and order a new SSD. Last one was Samsung and kinda expected more than 2 years from it. Any manufacturer recommendations? Samsung is now £140!

How do you know that the SSD is bad?

It’s a good point. I don’t know without the SATA cable or the prime 4+ USB B port working. I’m a bit stuck. I’ll do the test with the SSD next and then maybe operate off those and USB’s until the USB B is fixed. I don’t need the unit for any gigs until June. Just weird that it’s was fine last week when I last used it on 5.x.

The plot thickens… Exported library to an SD Card. Ran the SD in my Prime Go - Unit also upgraded to 5.0.1 as well. Library was readable. Ejected properly. Put SD Card into Prime 4+ and it also doesn’t recognise it as a source either. Prime 4+ plus might need a bigger operation that just the USB B port. Very strange as this unit is really loved and cared for. Anyone seen something like this before?

I did notice this morning that my Prime 4 internal drive took a while to appear after booting up, but it did so eventually. Maybe 30 seconds…

Thanks. Another good check I’ve tried. I rebooted and waited to see if either the SSD would finally arrive on the Sources list or the SD Card. Unfortunately, neither turned up. I would next try refreshing the firmware next but I have no USB B so will have to see if the USB A will recognise.

Kingston does good ssd:s, but also samsung has high quality so i dont think it is broken after 2 years, real bad luck if it is so

You could always do a factory reset & downgrade.

see if the thelps.

This story has not progressed well. Factory reset did not work. Neither did a rollback of Engine.

The Prime 4+ is now with a repairer for the original usb b port but looks like a whole new main PCB is going to need replacement. I’m expecting a fairly large cost on the repair estimate and will be having to decide what next. Gotta hope that after 2.5 yrs of careful ownership that it’s worth the repair. Has tarnished the Denon experience for me after what has been a solid unit until now. Anyone else has catastrophic Prime 4+ failures?
