I’m on Engine Desktop 5 (the latest). Today I ripped from vinyl 3 tracks in FLAC format, edited all tags and added covers as I always do by using Mp3tag. When I import them in Engine Desktop I see no covers and no tags, only the file name is there. -Rekordbox can read everything from the same files -I tried foobar and all tags and covers are there -I also opened those tracks on a network streamer and a Sony mp3 walkman, everything is ok. EVERY other device or software I try, no matter what, CAN READ the tags and covers. Everything is there. But not Engine Desktop 5…so I think Engine has a problem! This is the first time this happens, previous versions of engine desktop imported tracks edited in the same exact way with no problems. This is since 5.0. Anyone had the same problem?
Thanks for the suggestion, but it’s the first action I tried and didn’t work. I also put some tags manually and re-importing infos, deleted those. I even tried importing from rekordbox, same thing. Engine seems unable to read those tags.
I’m actually using FLAC exclusively, but my workflow is a little different.
I use a separate tool to synchronize my VDJ content with Engine Desktop, which is also much faster. Because of that, the covers are initially missing in Engine Desktop as well.
I basically use Engine Desktop only for generating the covers, waveforms and STEMS. For the missing information, I simply use “Read missing data” afterwards, as shown above.
And that works 100% reliably for me.
In your case, though, if the covers are embedded in the FLAC files, I would probably send a few of those files to Support so they can check why Engine Desktop is no longer reading them correctly.
Out of curiosity: what did you use to convert your files to FLAC?
Thanks a lot, I’ll try sending them one of my files. I recorded and directly saved in flac using Wavelab. I’ve a Yamaha AG06 mixer and a lite Wavelab version came with it.
You may have to resize the album art. I usually use 600 x 600.
Album art from Bandcamp is notorious for not displaying in Engine until you resize. Been an issue for awhile.
If I understand this correctly, since Engine Desktop v5.x was introduced, it shouldn’t really matter anymore how large the embedded cover in the FLAC file is. Engine Desktop extracts it from the file and scales it down to a reasonable size.
If I understand the problem correctly, the actual issue here is that Engine Desktop doesn’t see the cover at all. That’s why, for me, knowing where the FLAC files come from isn’t completely irrelevant — it might help determine whether there is actually an embedded cover in the file in the first place.
I’ve also bought tracks before where no cover was embedded at all. In those cases, I simply use VDJ to add the artwork to the file afterwards. There are, of course, countless other tools that can do the same thing.
Yup. this is correct. ![]()
They are resized to 256x256 with high JPG compression.
Here’s what my Artwork folder looks like when running

my bitmaps are all 600x600 or 700x700, and the problem afflicts all tags, not only covers! And this is the first time this happens. All other tracks in my library have covers and tags, with no problem.
So the tags aren’t being read at all anymore?
Which version are you using — PC or Mac?
If it’s Mac, I would also check the permissions. macOS has become quite a bit stricter about what applications are allowed to access, especially with files on external drives.
That sounds like it might be something outside of Engine Desktop itself. Otherwise, I would expect the forum to be absolutely flooded with reports like this. ![]()
OP mentions Win11 in the post ![]()
Oops… somehow I completely missed that. Thanks for pointing it out!
That rules out macOS then…
Still, it’s rather curious that this is happening on Windows 11.
I think the next step would be to establish whether this is something local to that particular installation, or whether someone else can reproduce the same behaviour with an example file on a different installation.
I’m curious to check with some new track (bought online)…if this happens again or if (as I suspect) it happens only with my vinyl rips. I want to try also with some CD rips, because obviously files are produced by different software. What is curious is that for tags and covers I always use the same Mp3tag software, for CD Rips, Vinyl Rips, and also bought tracks (I edit comments & genre sometimes and always resize covers). Next days as I will have some time I will investigate more and tell you more about. Curious because this is the only issue I have had with my Denon stuff
If the tag is not in the proper metadata format, it’s probable that Engine’s tag I/O library misses it.
This morning I had a free hour to dedicat at this issue.
I updated to 5.1.0 (just in case…who knows…) but nothing changed. I re-edited tags, tried new covers and deleted the “problematic” tracks from the library to reimport them again with new tags and covers…now tags are fine but again, no covers at all. So I tried re-opening and saving again flac files from Audacity: this did the job.
It looks like there’s something in files created by Wavelab that Engine Desktop doesn’t like. Now all those files have a cover and right tags.
Thanks again to everyone who helped!
