Engine 3.3.0 Profiles

Does anyone see any issues that might come up by using Profiles such as being tracked for any reason or being exposed for playing bootlegs or any number of other reasons that could arise from signing in to this? Initially I liked the Profile idea, especially the Tidal connection for bpms, keys, etc but then my mind wandered. Thanks.

I think you’re worrying about non events a bit too much, you’ve probably been signing into (insert laptop software of choice here) for years, how is this any different?

I don’t know yet, I haven’t downloaded 3.3.0 yet.

If you’re worried about it then best to stick to 3.2.0.

But if you’ve been using Serato/Traktor/Rekordbox with any kind of wifi connection on your computer prior to this, I’m not sure how logging into your device is going to impact your security any more than it already has been.

Even if you’re e.g. ripping music from YouTube and writing “YouTube Rip” into your tags, I highly doubt anyone from Denon is going to be sitting there looking through all the tags and reporting naughty DJs.

Over the years I’ve seen so much dodgy stuff posted in screengrabs by DJs asking for help with something. Clearly visible files and folders that make it blatantly obvious they’re sourcing music from DodgyDaveDownloads dot com [other fictional illegal sites are available].

Nobody seems to care.

Cool feature! I hope features like “color & name” mapping for cue- markers will be implemented to profiles as well very soon!!

On the other hand, you can bet that your playback history it’s worth gold for inMusic and that they have been selling/using that data.

I will update and will use the profile feature more than likely. Just wanted to hear from someone that might have similar questions to mine. Sometimes when you don’t even know what to look for or question, you sometimes get ideas from others. Thanks for your input.

Yeah man I’m sure you’ll be fine, PK pretty much summed it up above, people openly sharing the fact they’re downloading tracks from dodge.com and nobody cares.

Ironically when all these bootlegs etc were going on back in vinyl days the record labels weren’t bothered.

I don’t think I’ll be seeing you on Crime Watch yet :eyes:

The thing is, Engine DJ is connected to a internet source already by being on a laptop. All that syncing history etc would already be available via the desktop app should they need it.

But by openly stealing music from people who are already a very marginalized profit point, aren’t you just helping “dumb down” the level of good electronic music?

100%, I don’t think any of us are agreeing with the concept, just pointing out that it’s unlikely anyone is getting tracked.

Bear in mind that ‘remixes’ on Soundcloud etc are technically illegal, I have loads of those that I’ve downloaded over the years. Also a lot of stuff you get on Bandcamp from artists doing edits too.

I LOVE profiles! Such a smart idea and helpful if you’re switching Engine devices between several users for events. Very smart and I hope they take it even further! Am I wrong, I don’t believe it is backing up your device preferences too is it?

I have a radical idea. Regardless of tracking or no-tracking. Don’t rip off artists and buy your music. Honestly, you can soak yourself in the warm glow of righteousness: It’ll be worth it.

It is, at least before this update.

I think everyone took my example of bootlegs as the end-all of my post. I just used that as an example but yes, I have a few bootlegs. But I meant the post as an overall question about privacy and such. I’m not a hacker so I don’t even know what to worry about but thought others might.
