Display genre of loaded track

Hi there.

New(ish) Prime user here, first post. Awesome kit, just a couple of little tweaks would make it better.

Perhaps there is a way to do it already however I’m yet to find how…

Would it be too much to ask to display the genre of the currently loaded track along with the other current metadata (BPM, key etc, Denon SC5/6000)?

Additionally - can you make tracks in ‘folders’ filterable by genre?

I generally buy a mix of different styles at the same time and save them into a folder of that date so I can easily navigate to newer / older tunes whenever I want. I then also pre-analyse the files and sort the folder by key (Camelot). I can skip to the next few tune/s without having to navigate out to any kind of menu knowing that the keys will work.

Please correct me if I’m wrong however the only way I can seem to get genre showing at all is on the browse window, and only then if I have created a specific playlist for that folder. DJ’ing is about playing music on the fly, not playlists so ergo you should not have to create playlists for everything to show up on screen

Folder view, even for tracks already by pre-analysed by Prime desktop show nothing except for name an BPM. Sure you can filter by genre in the collection window and search but that gives you everything, not just what is in the folder.

Thanks all…

I think your issue here is your workflow is a complete outlier to how DJ software is being geared to work. Playlists and Crates are the fabric of all software and it’s designed as such to take advantage of them. Using ‘folder’ as a method of organising tracks without utilising playlists is making life difficult for yourself.

Ive just had a look on the Prime 2, you can sort by genre within in a playlist and it’ll display the genre on screen if you do that, so my suggestion would be to map your folders into playlists with the same name then use that method to search your tracks.

Thanks Stu.

I did already figure that as a work around and it’s not too painful. Still would be nice if that in folder list had more metadata that you could filter by either way.

Displaying the genre on the loaded track shouldn’t be too hard and seems to me an obvious oversight.

Thanks again for your reply.

Cheers

This is a bit odd, as when I play the track, I hear what genre it is, so I don’t need a text showing me the obvious thing…

Yeah sure, maybe after about 1 1/2 - 2 minutes however if you reckon you can tell a genre just from a few intro kicks and hats then I’ve got some bridges I’ll happily sell you.

Well, it is easy to tell if you know Your music, then you need only couple of kicks to even tell the title. Always preparer your library up front - sort the tracks, categorise them, it will be easier during performance…

Thanks. Got a few hundred thousands of tunes from vinyl to cd to digital. Been collecting quite a while.

While i’d love to be able to listen to them all and then spend days re-organising my life…Pioneers display genre.

It’s a pretty easy, simple function to implement and is in the metadata.

My library is also not small. Probably as big as yours as well. When I get new music, I have habit, to drop it on my usb stick, and plug it in my car. So I get familiar with all new tracks, when daily driving. Then I can easily figure out what tracks I have and how they begin.

Display genres, anyway, would be a welcome addition.

No worries…Actually doing that on the decks right now - going through some new tunes to familiarise myself.

Happy spinning!

Not telling you how to organise your music, but this is my personal setup… folders for different genres, I add new music to them as I buy it then just update the playlist of the same name in each of my DJ software. I can then sort that playlist by BPM/Date Added/Key etc whilst im playing.

This seems a bit “the cart in front of the horse”. During an event where genre had any bearing, wouldn’t the genre have been known as part of the selection process which caused the track the be loaded?
