Digital download sites

Hi all ,

I’ve recently moved over to Apple Music from SoundCloud on my SC Live 4 .

I mainly stream old skool /rave stuff from the 90’s. There are a few tunes I’m unable to get on Apple and I read I can purchase these elsewhere and add to my Apple library .

I’m looking for recommendations for sites that I would be able to do this .

Thanks in advance .

Not on Beatport?

I Like Music has some deep obscure tracks it’s catalog.

Music for Business - Official Music Catalogue For All Businesses https://share.google/LTOqIe9YqQdlbLQtF

99% of my tracks from Beatport.

For some old tunes I will trawl Discogs for an old Cd and rip that. Lots of scammers on Discogs these days though.

@Ben-E, interesting, I Like Music (Music for Business) is a more straightforward UK-centric service to handle licensing. In the U.S. venues or DJ’s have to purchased separate licenses from ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and Global Music Rights (GMR), at minimum. It’s assumed the music played is covered by one of those (hmmm).

@Mark_Hutchinson, yes, there’s no one source. My list below is U.S./lossless-available based, but may translate to the U.K.

Beatport.com, Traxsource.com, junodownload.com, bandcamp.com, us.7digital.com, qobuz.com. The latter two have a lot of classic releases and the prices are usually better. Bandcamp.com is loaded with classics and remixes of classics (±legal?).

You might also consider record pools …

Traditional DJ remix services have mostly melded into record pools, but some of them are still extant and sell their older remixes (e.g., Hot Tracks, Razormaid, Ultimix). If there is something impossible to find, the remix might be satisfying. This is a pretty good remix service release database: https://www.remixservices.com/.

DMC put out a lot of 90’s music. I miss DMCdownload!

Hi guys ,

Sorry for the late reply .

I tried Beatport for a while but found they just didn’t have enough of the more obscure old skool stuff I wanted although for more recent stuff they are excellent .

I’ve gone back over to SoundCloud for some of the ones I didn’t have but that’s a temporary fix .

YOUTUBE hold all the stuff I want so I might have to look at a way of ripping stuff from there.

I’ll also have a look at the other options people have mentioned .

Thanks.

Just beware that not only will the quality be horrible, but it’s also illegal.

Did you try and reach out to some of the artists/labels from back then to see if they’re helpful?

There is ways to rip from spotify with high quality. Like sidify for example.

But beware it is illegal :upside_down_face:

Youtube is a bad idea. If at all, your ripped tracks max at 128kbps. Ignore all the claims of the download services with their 320kbps, it’s fake, and any spectral analyzer (like Spek) will proof it quickly.

That being said, I follow the rule of rather having a track in 128kbps than not at all (if it’s one I really want and I can’t download or buy elsewhere). As long as I play it for myself, or maybe a smaller venue (e.g. bar, birthday party) nobody will notice, let alone complain.

Beatport has the biggest electronic music collection, but their prices are almost criminal, especially here in Europe. They charge the same 1:1 price here in € than in $, AND then they add VAT, which is something I hate in general. Like, you proceed to checkout, just be confronted with “ah yeah, you get charged some 8-10$ on top, enjoy your tracks lol”

Bandcamp is better, but their collection is smaller and the whole webpage structure seems far less organized. Bummer.

I’m not sure how much 90’s rave stuff they have, but for electronic music in general I can highly recommend www.volumo.com

The prices are fair, and they don’t charge extra for wav/AIFF, which is a big deal for me  catalogue isn’t nearly as big as Beatport, but a lot of big labels are being added regularly.

Using the service both as a consumer and from being a label owner with my catalogue there, I can definitely vouch for them

From a UX perspective, Volumo is HUGELY refreshing. Makes Beatport look like it’s from the 90s. :exploding_head:

It seems very well built in general - I do hope their current pace of having labels sign up will sustain
