Denon MCX8000 - "Display MCU missing" after firmware update

Hello everyone,

I hope there is someone here who has a solution for the known problem with the Denon MCX8000. My device permanently shows the screen freeze:

  • Left display: “Display MCU missing”
  • Right display: Denon logo

The problem occurs both in standalone mode and on the PC. When trying to reinstall the firmware, the update initially runs normally:

  1. display assets are successfully installed (status “Complete” on both displays).
  2. then the “Display MCU” update starts.
  3. both displays download the package synchronously.
  4. on the left display, however, the process gets stuck at “Erasing” and ends again with “Display MCU missing”.

I have already tried various USB sticks (FAT32, USB 2.0) - without success.

Between 2018 and 2020 there have been several forum posts about this, but unfortunately never a real solution. Since it seems to be a recurring problem, I am now asking in 2025:

Is there a known solution to this problem by now? If it is a hardware fault, has anyone found out which component is affected? I am an electrician myself and could carry out repairs, but would need a starting point.

Good questions btw.

Official responses in the past have usually been to sent it to the service center. From forum and internet posts usually users did multiple firmware upgrade attempts until they succeded.

Since MCX8000 is a legacy product, and on top of that a product started before DenonDJ brand was bought by inMusic, don’t get your hopes up on getting any kind of official support.

Getting that out of the way, since you know what you are doing, if I were you I would start by doing a “simple” check: open the unit and make sure the ribbon cables to the left and right screens are fully seated in the connectors.

Lots of all in one units are often transported and vibrations seem to easily affect those ribbon cables, there was a couple of posts here about ribbon cable being the issue with newer units jogwheel screens.

Good luck!

Also slacken the board with the rear connectors on it and check underneath that everything is connected properly. That can also be the cause of frozen screens.
