Buy new hardware. Wait or buy?

Hello everyone,

I’m considering switching from my OG Prime 4 to the SCLive 4 because I really like its appearance. I’m not interested in the P4+. It’s too expensive. I’m aware that the SC offers “fewer” features and a smaller screen, but I must say that what the SC does offer is sufficient for me. I’ve never had the need to use two microphones simultaneously, nor the EchoFX or the Zone Out. My question is, how future-proof is the SC4, especially since there are already features like Bluetooth which are no longer supported by the original P4? Is a new device possibly being planned? Should I wait?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Its not really a question anyone else can answer, what are you missing on the Prime 4 that you need on the newer device? Bluetooth to me is largely irrelevant and so is the Amazon chip so in that respect i wouldn’t be swapping my Prime 2 out for an SC-Live unless i had to (damage at a gig etc).

Unless your only criterion is transportability and you want something smaller and lighter, in my opinion there is no real point in moving from a prime 4 to an SC live 4. This seems to me be more of a regression than an upgrade even if SC live 4 is more recent. The SC live 4 is not more powerful or efficient than a prime 4 and with the exception of bluetooth which is a special case (due to a compatibility problem with the old bluetooth chipset), most of the new Features should theoretically also arrive on Prime 4, which will therefore continue to be updated.

If I were you I would rather keep the prime 4

For me any type of technology purchase has to be when you want it or need it. However if you are going to be making money from this purchase then I guess only you can decide this.

Certain manufacturers release new gear consistently, Pioneer being one :unamused: and this is very prevalent in the PC building space.

I used to do custom PC builds years ago on the side for some extra cash and people would always ask about waiting another few months for certain components, my answer was typically that when they eventually decide to build the PC would probably be out of date in terms of spec, so why wait!

When I purchased my SC500Ms and X1800 mixer, the 6000 series was literally announced shortly after, I wasn’t salty because it’s what ‘i’ wanted then, and when it came to selling them to upgrade to the 6000s I got a great price for them.

But here is the caveat, as much as I love my 6000s, my LC6000S, my X1850 and my prime go, the next purchase from denon if there is one would be heavily weighed out. Support for customers who have had issues, me included have been lacklustre, spare part availability for older devices in the prime range have not been much better.

If you wait for the next big thing - you’ll never buy anything.

Thanks for your answers and suggestions. I’m thinking again about whether I should buy something new now. For me it’s also about how the player is structured and I just like the look of the SC much better than the Prime series.

The SC Live’s are still among the most recent products - I’d be surprised if they’re next in line for an upgrade

And with the Prime4 getting a recent upgrade as well, my best bet would be that either the Go and/or the 6000’s would be next in line.

So if you like the SC Live, I wouldn’t be too worried about them getting outdated anytime soon.

I think the SC Live range already have the Amazon chip inside, don’t they?

Can relate as I have similar uncertainties. Phil Morse has some great advice as ever:

I like his point about how DJ gear is more like an instrument to invest in.

For me personally, I love my Prime Go, but I really want more channels and to play regularly on club style gear (even to invest in some possibly for an events company I’m building). It’s the money: how much and what to spend it on. I get overwhelmed and uncertain every time I sit down to think about it.

SC LIVE 4 user here. What you lose in I/O you gain in speakers and portability.

I use mine as a resident club dj connected to lights and everything.

Just one negative detail, in dark environment it’s sometimes hard to see some of the unlit buttons like beat jump.
