AIFF problems

Can anyone help me I’m having a problem with engine dj when I put the tunes on to my usb stick they are going on as MP3 instead of AIFF and it is showing on engine dj that it is AIFF. My using a MacBook Pro

Hi David_Mcconnachie,

welcome to the forums.

Fellow Mac user here and been using Engine since 2017 (1.x).

From my understanding, Engine does not transcode music when exporting as it would cause a loss in quality (and dramatically slow exporting down dramatically).

Are you sure you’re seeing what you think you’re seeing?

Hi so the problem I’m having is when I buy tunes from Beatport in AFFI then run them through engine dj then load them on to the USB stick then plug the USB in to the controller which is a Denon prime 4 they are showing as if they are MP3 and sound that they are MP3. Everything was working fine before and now I don’t know what I’ve done so any help would be appreciated thanks

What do you mean by showing and sounding like MP3? Most people cannot tell the difference between a 320kbit MP3 and lossless. Do they sound noticeably degraded? What visually is making you think they are?

Have you looked at the files Engine has copied to USB?

Pretty sure it’s not Engine desktop doing it. Are you sure you don’t have some auto encoding for exporting music on the mac?

Have you tried wiping the USB and doing a full export again?

Mac user here as well, and the majority of my files are AIFF, and I never experienced this. Also, even if you wanted, I’m not familiar with Engine having a format-conversion-feature?

As already suggested, I would look at the files that are actually on your USB to see wherever they’re AIFF of MP3.

You’re not running them though Platinum Notes by any chance, right? Just checking you haven’t set it to export as mp3

If you compare the files on your internal SSD to the files on your stick, do not only check the full file name + the file extension but the file “changed at” timestamp as well.

Is the changed at timestamp the same? Then it wasn’t modified.

Is the changed at timestamp the exact time you did the export? Well, that would be interesting

If your export workflow includes multiple steps using 3rd party tools, take note of the time when you used which software to track down the unknown file modifier.
