2 tb SSD for Prime 4 ?? Worth it or not

Hi after a lot of consideration I’ve purchased a Prime 4 which is arriving tomorrow.

Im using this at home & have a huge music collection that I’ve built up over the years & like the idea of having this stored within the unit. was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a good hard drive to purchase & if a 2tb might be too big & should i just stick to 1tb as i saw in a you tube video it had only been tested to 1tb but that was 2 years back pre its release .

Anyway thanks for your consideration

Firstly consider that you’ll need two of whatever storage solution you go for.

You’ve got your master music collection safe at home , probably with its own home backup but you’ll need the internal ssd for the prime 4, with all you home music exported to it, but also a backup of that on an external HDD or SSD.
(As long as you’re logical and practical you shouldn’t —-need—- the extra speed the ssd gives, it’s just nice to have and the price difference is significant for a backup.

If, or rather when, the internal drive become corrupt , and it’s not all that rare at all, you’ll need to continue the show from your backup drive

Go for a good make of drive for either ssd of hdd

Also consider that so far it’s a bummer to have to connect the Prime 4 to the PC every time you want to update your main library: you will always have to have the PC close to the Prime 4.

I would prefer to use a big SDXC (128 or 256 GB) installed inside the Prime 4, but you can easily remove it and connect it to your PC wherever it is placed. Or if you need large storage space you can use an external SSD with a USB3 port but that you can carry anywhere.

I’ve been using two PNY 512GB Pro Elite’s with zero issues… The only thing you need to be aware of is if your music collection is huge you need to do a quick reformat from FAT32 to EXFAT to avoid any errors.

Precisely for this reason I advise you to continue on this path, if you don’t want to have problems.

Obviously I didn’t write it, but you need to format the ExFAT.

Thanks for the info, my prime 4 has arrived & I’m looking forward to getting going :+1:t2:

I also recommend you purchase a second one… Dj rule #5… lol Always have a backup of your music with you… It will come in handy one day…

I would think that he may already have his music backed up. I know with my 2TB of music it is backed up in 3 places

I’m ordering mine next week, I was just about to ask the same thing.

Well, I want SSD’s and interested in recommendations for specific SSD model(s) to go with the Prime 4.

Use Samsung SSD’s (various generations) in most of the computers here and one CRUCIAL CT256MX.

Is there a recommend 1TB model, I will buy two.

I didn’t realize that, I need to read up more on this

Up to the current official version 1.6.1 there is no way to update the console’s internal library (i.e. internal SSD / HDD) via wifi / ethernet. So you can only connect the console to the computer via the blue USB3 cable: to do this you must have the two objects at a distance no greater than the length of the cable. Simple.

it was for this reason i removed my drive and keep the sata drive in a usb caddy (for now)

:+1: In fact, for the moment having the HD inside the console is only a problem and also many times there are users who have problems with system freeze or access problems, in addition to what we have written above. The day that they will give us the possibility to update the library inside the console via WIFI or ethernet then the use of the internal HD could be a good solution.

isn’t that assuming you are with Apple?

PC for FAT32, EXFAT for Apple?

No, I’m with Windows (PC). My memory cards (SDXC and USB sticks) are all formatted in ExFAT
