Let’s hope that what happened when some of Yamahas multi effect unit owner loudmouths kept up non-stopping impatient moaning. They thought they were doing the whole world a favor by making a fuss every few days. The company chiefs office read the dumb-as abuse and insults and asked internally for a list of what gear needed new firmware.
The list was made, and prioritised - good news? Excellent news? Amazing news?
No.
Yamaha are a multi part company, of which the multi effects units are just a part of. The list produced features ALL of yamahas audio products, including speakers, amplifiers, drum machines, sequencers, music keyboards and more and more.
The yobs who thought they’d poke some humiliation into, and some action out of Yamaha managed ended up getting multi effects units firmware pushed over halfway down the priorities list, with programmers being taken off of multi effects unit firmware to focus on lots and lots of other equipments instead.
The loud mouths who though they were about to be able to tell the world that they alone had managed to provoke Yamaha into action of bringing multi effect unit firmware release forwards, instead shot themselvss and all the multi effect units international customers in the foot.
We should be concerned of history repeating instead - De ja vu is a itch
I don’t know anything about Yamaha irl, but the scenario you describe above would lead me to believe that Yamaha is run by 13 year olds. If a company’s product/design decisions and prioritization is based on how much or how little management’s feelings are hurt by customers/yobs/loud mouths , I doubt that company would exist . Successful companies might be evil or overbearing or bad for the environment, but they aren’t stupid.
@Julianus I take it that you are someone who would probably caution against rocking the boat, any boat it seems, ever, no matter what? I suppose that’s a life strategy and I suppose it could be successful. But if no one ever said anything never to a company whose product they just bought out of fear of reprisals, I’m not sure where that leads…?
matt
I can see the danger. Some people don’t know the difference between rocking the boat, and capsizing the boat.
As DJs, we’re a minority compared to bands, musicians, home producers and everyone else who might use In-musics other products.
If it is the same software writers at inmusic making the firmware updates for Akai, Alto, Alesis, M-Audio, Denon Pro, onesixone, sonovox, Numark, and rane, then it’s easy to see how any of those brands could take priority for firmware attention over that of denon dj.
This is the bit that isn’t accurate though, my Prime set works perfectly, and has done from day 1, and it is this what is being defended. What did I buy my decks for - to be able to mix tracks on 4 decks whilst buying only 2. I can still do that. Is there software perfect, far from it, but it isn’t broken, and the decks do exactly what I was told they would do on the day I picked them up.
My mixer works great, my decks work great. Is the BPM accurate, no, but it wasn’t always accurate on Serato either and considering I’ve been mixing for 25 years it makes no difference at all to me anyway (I appreciate for some this is an issue, and it does impact on loops etc). There are loads of things that could be done better on the Primes, but that isn’t ‘fixing’ them, because they aren’t broken!!
The players were advertised as a standalone solution and have the ability to load/analyze and shift the beat grid on the fly but the fact that you can’t actually change a poorly analyzed BPM on the player is, in my mind, misrepresenting the capability of the player as truly standalone, is a huge oversight and needs to be addressed as a fix to what should be a basic function.
I can’t help but ring this one out. But for those that are happy that’s great, but this thread isn’t for those people. I DO have a firmware problem with using all 4 layers. It’s been noted. Other’s have noted it. BPM problems (on a modern day machine) are real. A big problem for a lot of people. It’s in EP and it’s on our SC5000s. Also, please do NOT compare Serato (which is frankly brilliant in this department) with our Prime system. Not even close. I can drop in 300 new songs and Serato has all of those tracks ready to go after about 1 minute (if that!) of analysis.
Again, If you’re happy that’s great! Please continue to be. But there are very real things that do need to be attended to with a firmware update for other people.
Is that not a warranty repair issue though, if it isn’t across the board?
I’m not in anyway comparing Engine to Serato, just that it took me YEARS to get my library sorted with beat grids (which Serato does allow you to edit superbly).
I noted the lack of flexible beat gridding a week into getting my SCs, but it wasn’t an advertised function, so I sucked it up and watch for the tracks that it isn’t accurate on and just mix by ear, and definitely don’t loop, but it still does what I bought it for.
I actually agree too with the thread, there are loads of things that need improving in both Prime and the players, but the use of language like “broken” and “useless” is so far off it is untrue, and then to criticise those that point this out as “fanboys” etc is simply disingenuous.
Now if we could go back to what people would like, then this thread might have some use again.
I’m fed up of those comments from those who can’t get over their sobs of Denon did something wrong once and I’m gonna mention it every day. Also comments from those who will offer daily slaggings off aimed at anything that isn’t their favourite DJ software. Change the record on both counts
So many things need to be improved but every now and then we get a new user coming here proclaiming how he (a pro with double digit years experience) cannot mix on prime gear and that’s it’s because of hardware yada yada ya
And we all know it’s just a matter of not 100% accurate BPM detection in EP and lack of easy adjustment on the fly on the players.
Definitely not a denon fanboy but I will forever mock these types of posts.
I have not really had any major problems after I figured out the better hard drive / SSD for my collection everything seems to be running okay at the moment, not getting the graphic or sound glitches that were present for me in the beginning, meaning overall I feel the interface is running much smoother.
So I am happy in that’s sense. and any other niggles are just a case of getting used to the tool at hand, Looping is not so bad once you get a feel for it by making the most out of what it can do.
although I have some great ideas for improving the tools and capabilities of the system, never the less I will be quite happy now! especially after watching a Denon review of the P4 at Namm and their it is stated the SC players will be getting some of that interface love too,
although I have one thing I recently decided would be much needed and that’s some method of recording via the x1800 as what we see in the P4 and at present this P4 is looking like the best option now, although not sure about midi out for driving FX units, cant remember seeing midi connection so I think we loose on some of the effects on P4 compared with the x1800 and have no midi to compensate, so it falls flat their always catch twenty 22, I respect the fact its good to have cheaper alternatives ranging from entry level equipment, but if I remember right and no midi device syncing on the P4 takes away from the overall power and flexibility and as this being marketed as a more portable/mobile unit but still hi end, yet its still not quite all it can be for those who like to push their own personal boundaries when Djing. This type scenario is the one I never understand, things are never quite balanced out just the odd thing that kills perfection and more so in the case of the High end equipment, think the world of djing is crying out for what Denon is bringing to the table, yet a few more brainwaves in the development and marketing area could make denons offering an unstoppable train that will only get bigger and bigger with its user base, but in my way of thinking these little things that are needed to be able to rise above any competition with similar equipment, its about taking the lead and pushing hard instead of waiting to see who releases what and playing those marketing games, I think Denon should just go in for the kill and be that company, they kind of are but just not quite killing it with evolution.
What’s the problem? I’m merely stating a fact and it seems to be under the appropriate topic. My statement doesn’t lean in either the negative or the positive.
