Track Drifitng

Hey guys does anyone have their tracks drift when trying to mix?

So my old numark controller never had this problem, once you lined up the track and had it in beat everything was fine. With my Prime4 the tracks seem to drift quite a lot.

I use enginedj to put all my tracks on and then use sync manager to export across to usb I then re-analyse. This still don’t help.

Some tracks drift a lot, some very little which I don’t mind as I am used to vinyl so your forever touching the vinyl.

Like I say on my old numark controller I could leave two tracks for the whole song and there would be no drifting. Also I don’t use the sync button.

A friend of mine had the prime 4 with no problems so I’m confused

Hello @Dean_Hollis, Welcome to the forum.

It would be very helpful if You could describe the process You are doing in order to beatmatch the tracks. You use Pitch at 4, 8, 10, 16%?? Do You use tempo sync or beat sync? Are Your tracks gridded correctly? - if You pay attention to the BPM values, this can have impact on the beatmatching process - not correct bpm readout can cause the tracks to drift. One track can be 0.1 bpm off even when they both show for example 120.0BPM, one can be 120.01 the other 120.00.

So the process to beat match is I use the pitch slider to line up the bpm’s and my ear, but got lazy as the numbers are there so just match the numbers. Then use the jog wheels to line up the tracks.

In terms of what pitch, are you talking about the default speed range? if so its at +8 to begin with but I adjust it too +10 to give me more pitch slide room.

I use beat sync never really tried tempo sync so maybe I will give that a go perhaps.

When I load a new track I make sure the grid is correct yes. I don’t do it in enginedj as it would take forever to go through each one so as I load them into prime I adjust when necassary. Which is usually aligned onto the first beat. I think thats what you mean by gridded correctly if not then it could be something I need to now thank you

So Now I think I know where can be the issue. The track as I said can be 120.01 BPM after You adjust it, but the display will show only 120.0. So when the numbers align, the tracks could be a bit off. I use 4% pitch range to get more precision on that when tracks need to be adjusted by 0.01. As bigger the pitch range, the lower the precision. Try with short pitch range (4%) and check what results will You get. Also keep in mind, that BPM shown on the decks can also be a bit wrong. Check if the lines on the beats are aligned. (Look at the waveform on the display).

Try this and let me know here what results You got. I hope this will help.

So I did a test. I started both tracks at 122bpm but at +50 and the drift was crazy like every 4 beats it would slightly move and would carry on for the whole track.

So I started again at 122bpm but this time at +4 and then adjust the pitch slider for the new location of 122bpm and started the tracks. The drift had pretty much gone. it was there but very very slight. Thank you dude.

I tried on my trance collection too which is higher bpm, I found that it worked better around +50, probably as they are like 138 bpm

Good, so experiment and you will find Your best setting for best results. If I can help any further, let me know. Mean while… Happy mixing

Thanks dude

Just one more thing as I have only checked a few tracks with this new information:) a couple do still drift but its not major. Is there any other options you would suggest.

Thanks again

Instant Double a track and it should not drift. If it does, something is wrong with the hardware or platter.

Hey, so put the same track on and no drifting. tried a few tracks and some different genres too.

Thank you.

I have a feeling there are more settings either in enginedj or on the prime 4 that need tweaking. The above comment about reducung to +4 has massively helped but not eliminated the drift. Maybe its just one of those things I dunno

As @Reese mentioned - make an instant double (press and hold sync or double click the browser knob). The track will get copied automatically to another deck and should run with exactly same speed.

Ah yes tried this never knew you could do that. Yes runs the same speed no drifting.

So it seems that Your tracks have wrong bpm assigned and this can be the issue. Check in Engine dj. Use Re-analyse option

@Dean_Hollis it would be useful if you stated the artist & title of some tracks which drift - so others can try, and also because we have no idea of the type of tracks you’re playing.

Older tracks do drift naturally. Even new tracks can, if for example you ripped from vinyl which was off centre.

They will also drift if it was hand drummed rather than computer generated, due to the human factor
