Sync Manager has never been fast enough, especially for those who are going to synchronize a lot of music!
A few days ago I started working on a new app, an evolution of Engine Sync, and I was testing what itās like to have a complete library of my music on an external SSD, and probably many here use it this way. Due to limitations of the internal HDD/SSD of their PCs or Notebooks. In my case, I wanted to test a function of the new app which is to create a mirror of music folders from the PC to an external HDD/SSD, like a backup of my music, a redundancy! But being able to keep it updated with 1 click after downloading music to the PC folders!
Okay, having done that I decided to test the SSD by synchronizing this new library with Engine DJ using my app.
In Engine DJ I ended up with 2 complete libraries of my music, one for the internal SSD of my PC and another for the external one.
Since Engine DJ creates a cross-referenced database on external drives used in the software, I was curious to know if the same m.db file, which is the SQLite database file that Engine DJ uses to save playlists and the library itself, was the same one that the softwareās Sync Manager uses for transfer. I always thought there might be a difference, but there isnāt!
Since Engine creates this database on the external SSD with my entire analyzed library on it, if you create playlists in the program with the music from the external SSD itself, Engine will save that playlist in the driveās database. And as you can see in the video below, my SC6000 read everything! Without me having to spend minutes waiting for the Sync Manager to do its slow work!
I believe that for those who use the analyzed library with SoundSwitch, as is my case, I want to see if putting the SoundSwitch library directly will work!
Has anyone thought of this before? I donāt remember seeing anything about it! So thereās the tip!
Iāve never seen anyone mention that! I always see people talking about how slow Sync Manager is! And I always suspected that the database would be the same on the PC and the equipment! That saves a lot of time!
That possibility was since day 1. I use this always when I want to make my own folder structure on the drive. I never use sync manager. Just drop the files on the drive, run engine dj on that drive, done. No sync neededā¦
Yes, very interesting! I never used it that way, as I always managed my music on my PC. Because of that, I thought that to have the entire library already analyzed on the external SSD, it was mandatory to use Sync Manager! Now, I miss the āCRATESā feature from the early versions of Engine DJ and OS even more, as they separated your library from your playlists in different places!
My main library is on my macbook too.
Just the music I want to have on the external drive, I put on the drive, then open engine dj and let it analyse, add some hot cues and loops, and done.
Usually I drag and drop files to the drive, not by sync manager.
But since I built in a SSD in to one of my all in ones, I manage the music on that drive by just keeping all on that drive, and eventually adding things when I have a fresh purchase from beatport.
Sync manager never worked for me as I would like to. Always confusing, always ending up with things, I donāt want it to do, too long. I skipped that even in Rekordbox.
Man, there are so many things that discourage us in this life.
At least being able to listen to good music while I organize my library (if thereās nothing more discouraging than that ) for the next event! It already renews my energy!
Iām working on a tool that will help me with this, buying new tracks and then updating my external SSD with one click. Itās a mirror of what I have on my PC, so everything I buy or download new music goes to the folders on my PC, and then transferring the tracks to the external SSD folders is annoying. So Iāve already managed to make the tool scan the folders on my PC and inject the new music into the folders on the SSD! NICE!!!
Now I think Iāll just stick with having this external library to use in Engine! Enough with sync manager!
I rememebr 18 years ago, I was at the gig with my laptop, where I had to play. I was ready to run Traktor and DVS system, but at the location they told me, that they could not get the turn tables and there is no space on the dj booth for a laptop.
Most discouriging thing was, sitting between the people in the VIP lounge and burning CDās just before the set Then still had to deal with CDJās 1000 mk3 with questionable buttons
Now I laugh about it, then it wasnāt that funny. The organiser totally effed up the communication beforhand.
Oh my God, burning CDs at the event, lol! I skipped the CD phase out of pure spite! I always forgot to burn some songs and got really angry about it! The first opportunity I hadā¦ yes, I messed up! I bought FINAL SCRATCH and got even angrier, lol!
I skipped that in 2010 already, compeltely going to Traktor, but the venue didināt had the space, and they didnāt arrange anything what was established beforhand. So I had to revert to CDās. Luckily some Djās had blank CDās with them, so I could just burn my playlist on the spot on couple CDās and be good to goā¦ But the stress before the set hit the roof.
I would probably have turned around and walked awayā¦ Organisers not reading riders, sighā¦
I did make a tool once to export a Traktor library to an Engine library to an external drive. Lovely to see everyone playing around with the database format
Organiser did confirm everything and it was quite a drive for me that days. I didnāt want to turn down that gig. It was one of those important events.
My main collection has always been on the āexternalā (internal SSD) of my Prime devices. I donāt use any Sync Manager. I control how the drive looks and create playlists in the same way.
Every Prime device with an internal SSD are simply copies of one āmaster SSDā. Thereās no music on my computer that runs Engine Desktop.
How do you guys back this up? Rsync, separate drive, nas?
Always been a bit scared of talking my main library drive to a gig. If I would loose it I have a problem. Watertight easy to use backup strategies which you wonāt skip or forget are paramount hereā¦
After this discovery (I didnāt know this before), from now on Iām only going to use my library in this external way! Since my tool will always mirror the folders from the PC to the external SSD, then I can continue to download normally to the PC, then I use it to synchronize with the External SSD and then I use the Engine Sync App to inject the new songs from the external SSD into the DJ Engine.
This whole process will be infinitely faster than using Sync Manager! How good it is to discover these things, even if late
My Engine Sync app will be evolving to include a mirroring tool. Itās a backup of your music to an external HDD/SSD; with a single click it creates one if you donāt already have one, and then with another click it updates whenever you download new music to your PC, injecting those new songs into your external HDD/SSD as well. Youāll always have an identical backup of what you have on your PC. You can use it as redundancy to never lose your music, or use it as I show in the video ā a much better way to use Engine DJ!
I have my PC library in the OneDrive folder, so my cloud backup is already guaranteed too, automatically. Redundancy is always good! Lose tracks never again! Iāve had 2 bad experiences with this!
