I’m experiencing the same issue with my brand-new Prime 4 G2. It randomly displays an error message stating that the external SSD is unloaded. This usually happens when a song is already playing while loading a new one onto a deck. It completely unloads my SSD. Sometimes the only fix is rebooting the device. Plugging the SSD out and in again won’t fix it in those occasions.

Hi both - what SSD cards, USB drives are you using? Thanks!

Hi aaaguy,

Apologies if I posted this in the wrong category. The issue occurs on the Prime 4 G2 running Engine OS in standalone mode.

I’m using a SanDisk Extreme 2TB SSD that worked reliably with my Prime 4+ for months.

I’ve tested several cables, including the USB-C cable supplied with the G2 and the USB-A-to-USB-C cable I previously used with the Prime 4+. I’ve also tried both rear USB-A and USB-C ports, but the issue persists with every combination.

To reproduce it, I simply open a playlist, enable Continuous Play, and leave it running. The SSD unexpectedly disconnects, triggering the “Media Not Ejected Properly” message. This can happen within a minute or after 10–20 minutes of playback.

Has this issue been reported before? Please let me know if there are any logs I can collect or further tests I can run to help identify the cause.

Quick update: the issue seems to start after assigning playlists to banks A, B, and C. Between now and writing my previous post, the SSD disconnected more than four times.

I tried renaming the SSD, and it ran without issues for a while. However, after assigning the playlist banks again, the disconnects returned.

I then cleared the bank assignments and tried to eject the SSD, at which point the console froze. The touchscreen and jog wheels stopped responding, although some controls, such as the Sweep FX, still worked. Pressing the rear power button had no effect either. I have a video showing this.

I’m now testing Continuous Play with no playlists assigned to the banks. So far, this has been the longest uninterrupted run yet. It’s too early to confirm the connection, but the playlist bank assignments seem to be a possible trigger.

Update 2: It ejected again. Will now be testing with another SSD (Samsung T7 Shield).

There are of course various versions of these SSDs, but those that I had were randomly unmounting or freezing the software or the system (Windows 11). And there is the unsettling fact that some of them had a hardware or production flaw where components on the circuit-board could eventually become loose, resulting in total data loss. ☠

The Samsung T7 Shield 4TB has been a blessing. On Windows 11, it can take a little while before full transfer speed is available once the drive is partially filled, so I usually leave it connected for a few minutes. I’ve never had any problems connecting it directly to my SC Live 4.

I’m curious whether switching to a Samsung would solve the problem for you. Since I don’t have a PRIME 4 G2, I can’t test it myself …

I also wonder whether the PRIME 4 G2 might handle connected USB drives somewhat differently from previous PRIME/SC models. The SSD itself may be perfectly fine, while the USB-to-SATA/NVMe bridge or the interaction between the drive and the newer hardware could be causing the problem. Power management or USB negotiation could potentially play a role as well …

Update 3: I put the SanDisk Extreme back in the Prime 4+ and connected the Samsung T7 Shield to the Prime 4 G2. I left both systems running overnight in Continuous Play, and neither experienced any problems.

This makes it particularly strange that the SanDisk Extreme repeatedly disconnects when connected to the G2, despite working perfectly on the Prime 4+. I also checked the SanDisk for firmware updates, but it is already fully up to date. I have never experienced any issues with this SSD on my Mac either.

Hopefully, this compatibility issue can be identified and fixed. If I can help by providing log files, videos, or running any additional tests, please let me know.
