Am I duplicating all of my music?

I’m a little confused by Engine DJ. With the following flow am I actually duplicating all of my files?

  1. Create a new folder on USB HDD that I use for my Mixstream Pro at E:/music/playlists/[new playlist]
  2. Copy my MP3s from my pc to the new playlist folder on the HDD.
  3. Open EngineDJ and create a new playlist on HDD
  4. Open HDD playlist folder in explorer and drag and drop all files into playlist on EngineDJ

Is this making a copy of the mp3 in the library folder? If so is it safe to delete the folder in E:/music/playlists/?

Engine only copies files when you export to a “performance” volume. That is, the SD Card, USB Thumb Drive or Internal SSD volumes that you use to play music (perform your DJ set).

When working with source music, it uses the database it creates and maintains to help you manage that music in its source location only. The only time it seems to change things is:

  • On some formats, it will act as a tag editor
  • When you remove from collection, it will delete the file, bypassing the recycle bin

Does this help?

There’s no need to create a folder on the destination drive, or copy MP3s on to it.

Step one is to open EngineDJ, then import the music from your source drive (i.e. the drive in your computer) to EngineDJ to create a database, playlists etc.

Once the database is created, you can then sync (using Sync Manager) the data to the destination drive.

These both help quite a bit, thank you

There’s a bunch of tutorials here: https://enginedj.com/kb/folders/69000638793/engine-dj-tutorials

This one is particularly relevant: https://enginedj.com/kb/solutions/69000844056/engine-dj-adding-music-and-exporting-to-a-drive
